We keep 22 Freshmen - We play a couple of tournaments and so, they all get to play.

Our JV will be comprised of the best Freshmen which we will know after the first couple of weeks and the best sophomores. In our area, we don't play Juniors on the JV. So, Our JV team will then have about 15 players and with this move, our Freshmen will have about 16-18.

Our Varsity will dress 18 through the year and 21 at regionals.

Now, these are large numbers and I don't recommend these numbers unless you can find something for each kid to do to make them a part of the team.
Son's school size is around 1200. 18 on varsity, 18 on JV, no frosh team (school only has one field). Seniors must make varsity. When my son tried out as a frosh, 45 frosh came out, eight were picked. Last year a junior tried out for the third time after being cut frosh and soph years, made JV last year. This year my '06 says the guy looks like he'll make the varsity squad as a senior, albeit as a bench player. We're all pulling for him.
20 on the varsity - includes some senior kids who were told they'd ride the bench. Occassinally there is a freshman on the varsity team along with one or two sophmores.

20-30 on the Frosh/Soph team (no one is cut). Freshman kids that don't play during the week in the Frosh/Soph games get to play in the freshman only games on Saturday and/or any other day a freshman game can be scheduled. Our league has no official frosh only division. The frosh/soph practice can be tough with 30 kids on the field at once (we have only one field).

School size is 650 boys and girls.
The Frosh/Soph and varsity are competitive teams.

Talented players will only suffer if they have a weak work ethic!! The good players will be on the field or in the cage anytime its vacant(i.e. lunch, after practice, take ground balls in foul territory or the outfield, Saturday or Sunday etc .....)

btw field turf does wonders for practice time and provides many opportunites for players to practice on thier own (the field is never closed).
We are around 1300. We usually keep 15-18 on varsity and 15-18 on JV. No Freshman team. We have two Middle Schools that feed our program and they usually carry 15-20 on each team. Middle school is 7-8 graders no 6th graders allowed to play in NC. We as a general rule do not allow Jrs to play on JV. The exceptions are the kids that are not talented enough to help us but show a great work ethic in the off season. They may not play much on JV but they are rewarded for their hard work and dedication.

This is just for Michael's Dad. I doesn't affect any other state than NC and just skip over this post if you live anywhere else.

You see it in our area occasionally down in South Carolina. In NC, the NCHSAA limits the number of years of HS athletic participation.

quote:
from the NC High School Athletic Assoc:
EIGHT SEMESTER RULE: No student may be eligible to participate at the high school level for a period lasting longer than eight consecutive semesters, beginning with the student’s first entry into grade nine or participation on a high school team, whichever occurs first. For students who skip the ninth grade and advance directly to the 10th from the eighth, the year prior to entering the 10th grade is considered the year of first entry into ninth grade for athletics.

If you were allowed to start HS athletics in the 7th grade, under that rule, you would have to sit out your Junior and Senior years. Not going to happen.
I keep 16-18 on the varsity, depending on who the 16th, 17th, and 18th guys are. If they have good attitudes and appear (based on previous experience) willing to accept their role, I'll go to 18. If not, we cut the dead weight.
We keep 15 on JV and 15 on varsity at a school of 2100 in the H.S. I hate cutting kids, but it is necessary to make sure that you don't have a ton of problems sitting your bench.
