School size 2300 (9-12 grades):
15 to 16 Varsity
15 to 16 JV
Never seen a 7th or 8th grader pulled up from Middle School (approx 1500 kids) ball to play on either V or JV. Middle School usually has 15 to 18 on a team and is comprised of 7th & 8th graders only (6th graders are not allowed to play athletics in Middle School).
We are around 1300. We usually keep 15-18 on varsity and 15-18 on JV. No Freshman team. We have two Middle Schools that feed our program and they usually carry 15-20 on each team. Middle school is 7-8 graders no 6th graders allowed to play in NC. We as a general rule do not allow Jrs to play on JV. The exceptions are the kids that are not talented enough to help us but show a great work ethic in the off season. They may not play much on JV but they are rewarded for their hard work and dedication.

This is just for Michael's Dad. I doesn't affect any other state than NC and just skip over this post if you live anywhere else.
You see it in our area occasionally down in South Carolina. In NC, the NCHSAA limits the number of years of HS athletic participation.
quote:from the NC High School Athletic Assoc:
EIGHT SEMESTER RULE: No student may be eligible to participate at the high school level for a period lasting longer than eight consecutive semesters, beginning with the student’s first entry into grade nine or participation on a high school team, whichever occurs first. For students who skip the ninth grade and advance directly to the 10th from the eighth, the year prior to entering the 10th grade is considered the year of first entry into ninth grade for athletics.
If you were allowed to start HS athletics in the 7th grade, under that rule, you would have to sit out your Junior and Senior years. Not going to happen.
The High School my son went to:
Approximately 1600 students...AAA
26 - Varsity
24 - On 1st JV Team
24 - On 2nd JV Team
Note: 2004 was 1st year for two JV teams and usually they only have Freshman and Sophomore players.

I keep 16-18 on the varsity, depending on who the 16th, 17th, and 18th guys are. If they have good attitudes and appear (based on previous experience) willing to accept their role, I'll go to 18. If not, we cut the dead weight.
We keep 15 on JV and 15 on varsity at a school of 2100 in the H.S. I hate cutting kids, but it is necessary to make sure that you don't have a ton of problems sitting your bench.

Coach May,
I like your approach. Rules are good. Breaking them when it is the right thing to do is even better.
