Boy is that a term I use all the time!

Just came across this and did a search here but didn't find anything so I thought I would see if I was the only one living under a rock for the last year. Smile

VHSL bans use of energy drinks

At Wednesday's executive committee meeting, the Virginia High School League passed emergency legislation, effective immediately, to ban the use of energy drinks by student-athletes during games and practices.

According to a PowerPoint presentation prepared by the VHSL Sports Medicine Committee, the rule was recommended because of issues of hydration and caffeine level. The presentation cited "potential for significant medical consequences."

The first violation of the rule will result in an official warning issued by the VHSL. Stricter penalties could follow for repeat offenders.

"The safety of the athletes was the overwhelming rationale for approval of the recommendation," Tom Dolan, co-director of athletics for the VHSL, told the Baltimore Sun. "We've been fortunate up to this point, but is it prudent for us to wait to see if we have an issue before we do something about this? For me the answer is absolutely not. They're our student-athletes. We have an obligation to protect them."

I must have also been under a rock because I hadn't heard about this. Any idea if VHSL has a list of which energy drinks are banned? Not all of them have the high caffeine content.

Also, do you know if this includes energy shots (like 5 Hour Energy). Seems like those would not have the hydration problem since they are so small and couldn't be confused with the need for water.

I went to the VHSL site and there is no list to be found as far as what they consider an "energy" drink. At least I couldn't find it. There was a reference a couple of them in a PPT but that was it. I am not sure it's even feasible to try and come up with one as fast as these things pop up on the shelves these days.

I'm not sure how they would go about enforcing it either.

I would say just drink water and everything is good. Smile
