In a situation of redshirt possibility where the player has already talked to the coach, the assistant anyways not the HC and has been told "they have a plan" but no clear understanding of what the plan is, do you just insist the player go and get clarity or is there ANY point at which the parent should step in?  If it is a scenario where they are trying to "ease him out yet allow him the yr of elig" I think it is important to know that to help your son arrange for another college to be contacted etc.

Thoughts?

Your son is a grown man in college and you should never step in this type of situation but you can definitely help him in what to ask.  I would have your son go to the HC and ask what he wants him to work on to be better prepared for next season.  Does he want him to work out at a certain position, work on hitting, fielding, running, etc.......?  Have the HC give your son a plan of what he wants done because if he's getting redshirted there is a reason why.  I think it's very reasonable for the HC to give him a straight answer on this.  If he doesn't then I think it's a red flag and then your son can talk to him if he's really wanted next year or not.  But I don't think you need to step in at all.

I can tell you back in the late 80s early 90s I ran track in college.  At that level the kids are expected to be the ones advocating for themselves.  I know our coach would not even talk to a parent about things like this.  I would have been horrified if my parents called my college coach to discuss my performance and "playing time".

Can someone enlighten me on what possibilities could come at the end of the season, i.e., 1) Could not offer another scholarship and send him on his way.....2) Redshirt him and keep current scholarship on table......things like this.

I want to be, and have him prepared for all possible situations he will be confronted with.  If he simply gets redshirted is he obligated to the current school or can he take off to another college and retain that redshirt (other than a D1).

Keep in mind that his reshirt designation does not come until after the championship season.

Your son needs to handle this himself, if he isn't sure what the plan is, then he needs to ask, because he will not know how to improve unless they let him know what he needs to work on.  He cannot contact another program unless given permission.

Coach2709, I did not recognize you!
