Julie,

I saw the last post about the monthly fee and am again wondering. Have you looked into somewhere else to host this site? I work for a company that has a website that uses a HUGE amount of web storage space. We are a nationwide RV dealership. We have hundreds of units on our site, get 1000's of hits per day in the busy season ....and have thousands and thousands of pictures uploaded to our site at any time....also info, etc, etc, etc.....and we don't pay what you're paying for our website and hosting. Not trying to tell you how to run your site....just wondering if there isn't a more economical way for you to have it hosted.

PS....I don't have access to Paypal at the moment due to a mixup with a bank account. If you have an address, I'll drop some $$$$ in the mail. Love this site.

Thanks, this is a question that gets asked from time to time. Yes, I have looked into other options, and I am currently pursuing a possible savings which I'll explain below, but first...

The reason we pay such a huge amount for hosting is that it includes not only a large amount of server space, but also:
  • a pretty sophisticated software program which allows us to do things like set up Moderator permissions, suspend and reinstate troublemakers, monitor certain forums etc.;
  • a fulltime technical support team which keeps updating the software and maintains the databases, and quickly fixes any technical problems on the rare occasions that the site goes down;
  • a lot of processing power which allows users to search for topics in our huge repository of posts (over 700,000). When I've tested some cheaper hosting options, searches would crash/hang up the system at about 100,000 posts.

The original owner of the HS Baseball Web (Bob) started the site on a cheaper hosting option, and after a couple of years the site crashed repeatedly and he had to move to a better, more expensive host. That one sufficed for a while but finally crashed repeatedly also, and he moved yet again to our current host in December 2002. After his past experience with two hosting platforms that crashed, I've been very cautious about moving to a less costly platform.

But with all that being said...

I am negotiating with our current hosting company to try to get a more affordable service plan, based on a new service they have just rolled out.

Thanks everyone for your generous donations to help with this month's bill!
