WEEK 3

SCAC Baseball Offensive Player-of-the-Week
(For games played Monday, Feb. 18th through Sunday, Feb. 24th)

EVAN JONES OF TRINITY (TX) UNIVERSITY, a 6-3, 235-pound sophomore first baseman from Hillsborough, Calif., has been named the SCAC Offensive Baseball Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday, February 18 through Sunday, February 24.

Jones hit .538 (7-13) in four games last week, leading Trinity to a 3-1 record in games he played. He scored seven runs and drove in 13 more, accounting for nearly half of the team’s run total over the past five games.

Jones had two doubles and a triple to go with two home runs in the weekend series with Rutgers-Newark. He hit a grand slam and tallied seven RBI in Saturday’s win, coming within one of tying Trinity’s single-game record.

For the week, Jones carried an astounding slugging percentage of 1.308, totaling 17 bases in seven hits.

For the season, Jones leads the team with a .471 batting average, having eight hits in 17 at-bats. He is tied for the team lead with nine runs scored, and leads the team with 14 RBI. The next closest to him in RBI is five, held by four players. He has a slugging percentage of 1.235 this season and is reaching base 59.1% of the time he comes to the plate.

[Nice job, Evan!! And congrats to ILVBB for raising a big'un who can rake!]

Thanks for the warm comments.

That is only part of the story. My son called me after their tuesday game. He did not play in the game while another player (great kid and a friend of my son) played first. He was in a semi-foul mood.

I told him that he needed to show the coaches that he was willing to do anything to earn his spot.

Wednesday and Thursday he stayed on the field for an extra hour hitting. He said that he hit nearly 600 balls the next two evenings, lights on, by himself.

When I spoke to him after his game Sunday, he had to admit that the extra work made the difference.

The downside to all the hitting is that he cracked his bat.
