Michael Steven Taylor, 55, of Salisbury, died peacefully on Monday, February 24, 2014 in Knoxville, TN. Born in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Calvin A. Taylor and Mary Jane Johnson Taylor.
He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Tammy McCune Taylor; 2 sons, Lucas David Taylor and Todd Michael Taylor, both of Salisbury; 2 sisters, Teresa Koppleman and her husband, Robert of Millersville, MD and Denise LaCurts and her husband, John of Fruitland; and a step-mother, Edith Taylor of Salisbury.
Mike was employed as Stage Manager at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center and also for TEAM Productions of Ocean City, MD. He loved the entertainment industry, taking pride in ensuring the safety of crew and patrons alike at every event he managed. His love & dedication for the theatre and live entertainment spanned over four decades and included the Community Players of Salisbury, indoor and outdoor festivals & special events throughout Delmarva, and hundreds of concerts & shows at the Civic Center, Ocean City Convention Center, Dover Downs, Delaware State Fair, Harrington Casino, and the John Paul Jones Center in Charlottesville, VA. He also worked as a rigger for events at four presidential inaugurations. Most recently he was pleased to be involved with the production of the Dew Tour in Ocean City, MD.
Another of Mike’s passions was umpiring baseball. An active umpire for nearly 40 years, he officiated games at levels from Little League to college baseball. He was a leader in the Atlantic Coast Umpires Association and served on the Board of the Eastern Shore Baseball League. He sought to provide an atmosphere of fair play and uncompromisable sportsmanship at every game he worked. To hone his skills and knowledge, Mike actively wrote on several internet boards and is known throughout the Country for his acumen of the rules of the game.
Always willing to help, Mike volunteered as a coach in the Salisbury Pony League and later served as Umpire-In-Chief for Salisbury Pony League and Salisbury Colt League. Most recently, Mike took great joy in volunteering with Guardian Angels for Soldier’s Pets and Dogs on Deployment by fostering the pets of military members who are deployed overseas.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 3, 2014 at 5:00 pm in the Midway Room of the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center in Salisbury with Rev. Tom Bunting officiating. There will be a visitation 2 hours prior to the service.
