What do you do to help teach charging the baseball? What drill do you do?

Do not practice "back handing" the ground ball. "that is for showcases". Start deep and move forward before the ball is hit. Keep the feet moving! The coach hits the ball left, right, right- left.

Get an empty bucket of balls and put it about 6-7 feet in front of the fielder and slightly to his right. When you hit/throw/roll him a ball, tell him he has to get around the bucket and then field the ball. This will help him charge the ball and start getting momentum towards first base.

One thing that helps by default is to have runners and hit slow rollers and routine GB's so they are forced to.

We fall into this category. We have the mentality that we are moving forward on everything. We do not funnel ground balls we pick through them and are moving.

So do we but sometimes I have a hard time defining where to draw the line with when it is still appropriate to break down and field the ball squared up (still working through it) as opposed to taking it more "on the run". Thoughts?
