My son has been invited to play summer ball with the Maryland Bombers in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate League. Was hoping that anyone could share some information about the team, the competitive level of the league, and Gene Bovello, the General Manager. Can we count on receiving solid instruction and development?

My son played in the Clark Griffith Baseball League last summer, competed well and had a great experience. Are the two leagues comparable? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the "Clark Griffith League" dispanded before last summer, hence the reason most of their teams either went to the Eddie Brooks or the Cal Ripken Sr league! Both are solid, Cal Sr competition level top to bottom is better, but the EB top two or three teams will be as good as anybody's! You can also look online at the Cal Sr league, use a search and you can see rosters and where players ended up?
Just got off the phone with Gene "IC" Bavello and is looking for players.

MD Bombers played in the Cal Ripken Sr League at last years inaugural season.

Should your son played in the Clark Griffth League in 2005, 2006 will be a step up.

Yes, the Clark Griffith League remains in existence as it has been since 60's (and before). Today, CGBL is all VA teams.
The MD teams are the CRSL.

there is no comparison. the ripken league is where u want to be, if you are any good. the eddie brooks league is superior to the griffin league. the big train and the 20/u orioles of dean albany are very good and draw players from all over east of da mississippi. the bombers and thunderbolts can play, but if you are any good it is best to play for the orioles. they most always win and their kids go to the best schoools. if you can play for the orioles[albany] you are on the fast track.

Novice Dad,

Good question.
Clark Griffith Summer League (CGL) is one of the oldest and established college summer programs.

For many early years, CGL was based out of Wash DC. From the mid 60's - 90's., CGL is VA based. I played in the CGL (with Martz Insurance) having won many CGL championships. In those days, the best of match ups was DC based Martz Insurance vs Balt based Johnnie's. With that said, my family may have the only father-son to win the CGL championship as my son enjoyed his summer with Big Train (in '04).

However, since in this modern day era' even grown baseball men are unable to come to terms with organizing collegiate leagues as the Maryland based teams in the CGL combined with a some Baltimore based teams in the Eddie Brooks League to form the Cal Ripken Sr League (having it's inaugural season in 2005.)

What this means for the DC-Balt Metropolitan area for college players is three summer leagues to choose (or look at):
- Clark Griffith College Summer League
- Cal Ripken Sr College Summer League
- Eddie Brooks Summer League.

At the 36,000 ft level, one can assume the level of play at the teams in either league that play .500 ball is about the same.

At the top of the echelon (from the 60's to ~ 2003), it typically became a Va based championship club in the CGL vs a MD based championship club (from Baltimore). 2004 was the first year the CGL has crowned a champion from Maryland.

Havng said that, a typical criterium to consider may include:
- Organization of Summer League
- Quality of Summer Coaches
- Playing Time
- Fan Support
- Housing
- Support for Summer Job
- Location
- Distance to travel to games
- Character

Eddie Brooks by far is among the easiest of leagues to travel to games. It's is primarily Maryland based college and HS players

In 2005, the CGL was relatively easier of leagues to travel. It's is primarily Virginia based college and HS players.

In 2005, the travel between games of the CRSL was something to take into consideration. CRSL is primarily D1 & JUCO college players, over half Maryland based (either hometown or college).

Fan support is minimal for CGL, EBL, & CRSL (with the exception of Bethesda's Big Train) compared to 6,000 per game attendance at other collegiate summer leagues around the county.

Hope this gets you thinking (yet remember, end of Dec may present only openings in the Eddie Brooks League, as the top teams in VA, DC & Balt fill up quickly)

Regards
Bear
