STYLES, Show me in the rule book where the tie goes to the runner. The tie goes to who ever didnt pis me off that game. So when you become old and have to hit the 7mph slow pitch softball and complain wheather its a strike or a ball and cant get down the line anymore and want every close call to go your way. I will be there to call you out. 2ndbasemom, no istant replay .
I'm all in favor of it. I'm more in favor of electronic umping and certainly when it comes to balls and strikes. I'm sick of umpires who have "their own" strike zone and even sicker of umps who plain old don't have a clue behind the plate. That goes for veteran pitchers and hitters who have "earned calls"....for every pitcher and hitter, rookie or hall-of-famer a strike is a strike and a ball is a ball.
you must make clear the difference between the use of instant replay and the use of electronic strike zones. of course what you suggest about electronic strike zones would be quite simple to put together with the technology we have today. but it would also completely eliminate the use of umpires in general. the purpose of instant replay in football and basketball is not to referee the game, but to review a judgement made by the referee. what you suggest about electronic strike zones would mean a computer would be in control of the outcome of a game. we absolutely cannot have computers running athletic competitions. therefore, I can see the argument about implementing instant replay into baseball (although I disagree with it) but it's hard for me to understand how people can want the use of electronic strike zones.

Frank! No, the use use electronic strike zone would not put control of the outcome of the game to a computer.....it would put the outcome of the game in the player's hands...which is where it is supposed to be. UMPIRES SHOULD HAVE NO IMPACT ON THE RESULT OF A GAME....except to correctly judge calls. To say that the "human element" of flawed umpiring is a sacred or good part of the game is absurd. The object is to get it right.
They are already using this technology to monitor the umpires and boy are they upset. The truth is that is how they were able to get a more universal strike zone as compared to the National vs. American league zones. The umpires now work both leagues so this was needed. The problem is that the umps know which fields are being monitored and ump differently for those. IMO they should have this monitoring for all fields and all umps should be rated for their strike zones.

As far as instant replay is concerned, this would only slow up play a ton since they would want to replay dang near every play. For the most part, the umpires do an extremely good job for a game that is so fast today. Also notice that the umps are in far better shape today than ten years ago.
