With the college coach only being able to contact to student/athlete X number of times some of the college coaches seem to have found a way around the rule. They phone the high school coach during the day and ask the high school coach to have the athlete call them between certain hours. Is this legal or is it legal and just a loop hole in the rules?

cbg,
There are rules, but just as everything in life, there are ways to get around them! Wink

The coach is allowed one phone call a week per recruit but the recruit can call him as many times as he likes.

I answered this question to the best of my knowledge without searching high and low without citing the exact NCAA rule.
cbg,
Probably is a violation but I would think it would be a violation on the part of the recruiting coach and not the player. I know we were a little “gun shy” of the NCAA during the recruiting era but after it was all over I came to realize 99% of the rules are in place to protect the athlete. The compliance office of the college is required to document recruiting activity...not the athlete. If an athlete doesn’t accept any gifts and doesn’t sign with an agent he’s fairly safe.

keep in mind most recruiting rules are to protect the player, the one call per week rule to help insulate the player from pressure & "harassment"

it seems resonable to me that if there is a relationship being built that a college coach might pass along info & times he'd be available to receive calls without the frustration of getting his voice mail, as his schedules could have changed since his "weekly call".

if you're not comfortable with it, no problem - don't pick up the phone, don't dial, & don't call

hey, there are a ton of guys getting a call every few weeks that would LOVE an invite for a live chat with a college coach

Sounds like the coach may have already made his "weekly" call to the recruit. Coach wants to make sure that recruit understands that recruit can call him...
As others said, the coach may want the kid to show interest, too. Or perhaps this had not been explained previously. Or, he's reminding the HS coach who he is looking at, & oh, by the way, he can reach me between x & Y at such & such number.
No big deal, at all. TPM is correct on the rule.
