Johnny Pesky and his brother Vince

I just got back from a little gathering in a Portland church basement where we honored Johnny Pesky, along with his brother Vince.

Johnny grew up in Portland. I never met him, but I've known Vince for awhile. Vince was actually signed by the Yankees, and was quite a ballplayer in his own right.

It was really fun listening to Vince as they went through a bunch of photos from their childhood, growing up in the shadow of the old Vaughn Street Ball Park where the Portland Beavers played. Back then the Pacific Coast League was basically a major league.

Vince is 91, and is sharp as a tack. A wonderful family, those Pevoskovichs!

I think I can see why the name was shortened to Pesky, probably for the box scores! With the passing of Johnny Pesky, that leaves only two surviving players from the Red Sox AL champion's of 1946, one of whom is Dave "Boo" Ferris who I know and is the patron of Delta State baseball.
