My 2021 started D1 JuCo ball today. I was prepared to hear of a monster 60-man roster of returning Covid freshman, D1 drop downs, and a big recruiting class… But everything seems normal (just like HC said it would be). ~10 returners and maybe 30-35 new kids (handful of those drop downs/transfers).

Given some expected attrition, that’s looking like a 35-kid roster. I’m happy about my son’s chances to compete and get playing time with that size.

Would it be normal to see drop-downs past this point?

I think we have 10 D1 drop downs.  I can't keep up with all of them.  From what I saw last year, some will be really good and some won't be.

That’s a good point. D1 drop down doesn’t always equal better player. Kids move from D1 to JuCo for many different reasons - one of which being the kid isn’t as good as the D1 thought he was. D1s miss on a lot of kids - especially ones that look the part but can’t play. So most D1s over-recruit to play the percentages knowing that half of each recruiting class will not last more than a year.

Comment on D1 over recruiting … It’s not just missing on talent. A coach can’t tell which players are going to see a challenge for the first time in their life (everyone had a certain degree of talent) and mentally roll over and die.

My son told me there were talented players around him who spent more time worrying about the competition than what they had to achieve.

There are some talented players who don’t have what it takes mentally when the first hurdle appears.
