After red-shirting his first year at a D1, my son will be transferring to a JuCo. He's in the portal, so he will be able to also speak to NCAA schools, as well. The JC thing will be a one year stop, not just for athletic reasons, but because he entered college as a sophomore, so he really can't do 2 years from an academic standpoint.

I have a lot of experience with recruiting out of high school, but zero when it comes to how schools recruit JuCo's for transfers. Any experience that can be shared would be helpful.

As a high school player, he sent video and information to D1's, usually initiating contact. Is this something that happens at this level, or should all recruiting be left to the JC?

Also, if schools who contact him through notification coming from the transfer portal, should he be discussing 2021 possibilities?

You can do recruiting the same way he did the first time.  You can contact Juco's and let them know of your desire to be considered by them.  The big difference is that he may have to go workout with them since he did not play this year.  Is he playing summer league?  If so, you want to include that schedule.  If not, something he should strongly consider.  Would he not consider going straight to another D1 or is he bent on going to Juco this year?

He's already committed to Lamar CC for next year and immediately got a good D2 offer and one D1 offer when he went into the portal. However, the problem with going straight to another D1 is that he'd have to sit a year and, because he red-shirted this year, he'd only had three years of eligibility after that. But, if the right offer came...

I guess what I was wondering is if he should be proactive now in pushing himself to D1's for transferring out of JC after next season. The JC coach already understands it's only going to be one year there.

Root,

Best of luck to your son.  Can you elaborate a little on the academic side of things.  With the increased number of kids entering college, I am curious how it works when you transfer.  If a kid enters a 4 year with 30 hours and then gets another 24-30 hours in year 1, how does Juco work in year 2?  How many classes does he take?  Is there a minimum he must take?  If so, does he just take some easy classes that won't transfer?

D,

You need to check with Rick from informed athlete. Transferring from a JC to DI can be tricky when athlete is advanced academically. Something about taking classes that advance their education. Most JuCo's don't offer higher level classes. Again, check with Rick.

My son took a very similar path (red shirt freshman at D1 to Sophomore at Juco back to a D1 for his JR/SR years).  I'm no expert in the process, but a few observations:  It sounds like you've done the upfront work, but it's important that the Juco coach understands and agrees on the 1 year stop.  In our experience, some tried to push for 2 years (which, like you, didn't make sense for him).  Most higher end Juco's have a pretty established group of D1's that they work with.  That may or may not include schools on your son's D1 target list ... We did go back to a several schools that recruited my son out of High School to let them know his plans, and I know that several contacted the Juco coach for updates ... not just on performance, but some wanted more details on why my son was transferring.  He did put together a list of potential target post-Juco landing schools and his Juco was very proactive in marketing him (videos, social media, etc).  The good news is that a lot of Juco to D1 recruiting takes place in the early fall (particularly for pitchers).  He ended up with multiple offers and was committed to his new D1 by early October.  Best of luck to you son with this process ... it's nerve racking, but in our case it 100% worked out for the best.

So, to answer a few questions:

The coach was on board that it was a one year deal.

Academically, we've pretty much got all our ducks in a row for transferring after a year. he'll meet all the qualifications (assuming no academic problems while there) mainly because all of the credits that made him a sophomore entering college in the first place were actually earned at this JC while he was in high school and they actually offer enough transferable classes towards accounting/economics.

He's getting a few calls from coaches that have seen him in the transfer portal. His recruiting path was a bit strange. While he had good offers and a decent number of choices, he was the rare example of a kid who could have waited until his senior year rather than commit in the summer before his senior year and signing the Nov NLI. From summer to spring, he went from sitting 87-89 and occasionally touching 90/91 to having a dominant senior year where he was sitting 91-93/T94, struck out 121 in 52.2 ip and only gave up 6 hits all year. So, he was fielding calls from P5's that didn't offer before who suddenly were checking in to ask if he had actually signed  his NLI. They still had money available at that late hour.

Our hope is to also garner interest off the transfer portal. I'm sure several schools, if they were interested, would be quite happy to know they wouldn't have to pay for him for a year where he couldn't play, so hopefully that will drum up interest for a 4-2-4 path, assuming he shows up next year.

He was on the roster of Mat-su in the Alaska league for the summer, but got pulled off the roster when he told the coach he was transferring. Despite that, his current HC has been more than cool about the same thing and will be nothing but positive when discussing him.

going through this right now, son started out at Coastal- went to juco at Polk state.  has been a great experience for him.  70 at bats in the fall, another 200 this spring.  Coach has been great with recruiting - interacting with schools and pro scouts and offering his guidance and advice to my son.  this is our experience, not sure what the norm is.
