My son (current junior) sent out 12 contact letters a couple of weeks ago. He only sent 12 and they are to the schools he really would like to attend, and range from D1, D2, and NAIA. They were mailed on a Wednesday and Friday he got an email from the Asst. Coach/rec.co-ordinator at a D1 that is his first choice. He wanted us to send a tape. Saturday he got a letter from the Head Coach at a school he would probably rank high on his list, and he asked for his transcripts. My questions are: What should I put on a tape? As HS practice has not started would it be acceptable to take him to a field and just film 15 - 20 swings and put him at short (he's a MI) and film the same amount of ground balls with throws to first. Is this going to be okay with just him on the field, along with someone to take the throws at first? As far as the transcripts is it okay at this early point in recruiting to send copies of the latest one we have, or do I need to get the sealed version? I know when official recruiting age/time gets here they need to be sealed but not sure now with him being 16 and July of official contact time a ways off. Just trying to do the right thing and hoping to get some advice.

Many Thanks

Just a few thoughts from my experience

01-- the first thing you want to do with a video is to immediately grab the coaches attention--that means you want the player to be in tip top baseball shape so that he shows to the best of his ability

02-- sometimes "haste makes waste"---if the conditions--field, physical shape etc-- are not right why not wait a bit-- he is a junior and they cannot talk to him until July 1, except for one call in March--make sure you do it right

03 -- as for transcripts if they are decent send them--you school can probably get you an unofficial copy. If they are not decent and his juniors b grades will improve the picture wait until the end of the junior year to send them out to coaches

04 -- keep in mind first impressions are key here so you want to make sure you get their attention with the first go 'round

05-- since he is getting responses it tells me, without seeing your son play, that he has something to offer

Please feel free to otuch base with me if you have any more questions or just want to discuss the process

rmode...the transcripts do not have to be official at this time. The official transcript, when requested, will go to the admissions office.

Video....well what we heard most often was keep it short, and if you do not have any actual game footage then you'll have to do practice shots...as you described. The subject of making a video has come up many times before....if you go to advanced search and put in "video".....you'll probably find a lot of posts....
rmode - You might want to request an updated transcript and that way you'd have the most current grades including the fall. Don't worry about the current semester. Just purchase one and then you can make copies yourself for the schools. Like AZRed said, you don't need official ones yet. Schools are just wanting to take a look to see if it appears he's on track at this time.
I want to thank everyone for their comments and suggestions. As this is my first time going through this process (older son never had the grades) I want to make sure he/we do the best thing. Wasn't sure if we should jump on the video thing while it seemed the fire was hot, or wait untill Feb. when the HS will be on the field and I can film some actual practice. I'm sure I'll have more questions as we roll along, and I'm thankful for the input from those in the know.

Thanks again

Congrats. As others have said, I would...

A) Make a tape at practice of BP swings, pitching, fielding, running and spend a few bucks to have it edited down to 3 or 4 minutes. This assumes he is in shape and sharp, skill wise.

B) Send the grades along with a note from your son.

C) Send your sons cell number as they can text message him all they want.

Stay proactive with schedule and grade updates. Good luck.
Coach Merc thanks for the link. Nice video. How does that place work? Can you send them various home-shot video and they will edit it and turn it into something like you have? Looked around on the site a little before I had to leave out but couldn't find anything but subscription rates. Wondered what they charge for transforming my stuff into a professional piece like that.

Thanks again
