My son is experiencing severe knee pain from years of catching. He is even considering not playing in college next year because of it. He works his legs every day in the gym, doing exercises recommended but it is still difficult for him. Does anyone have any recommendations. What about these liquid supplements such as Flexicose?

When my son was thirteen, he was catching and started experiencing some knee pain. We thought it was temporary and would go away. It didn't.

When he was fourteen, no longer caught but still had some trouble with pain. After his 14 yr. old season, I heard a sports orthopedist on the radio say, " any pain experienced in the knee in a teenager is not normal and should be checked out right away."

We got him in to an orthopedic who examined him, did an MRI, and diagnosed him with a somewhat rare but not unheard of condition where the bone at the end of the femur actually dies.

Long story short, surgery and over a year before he was able to go full speed without experiencing problems. No problems at all today, but in all it cost him 3 years of development.

Get in to see a qualified orthopedist ASAP.
My son went through this in middle school and had tremendous pain in both knees with one worse than the other. He was quickly diagnosed with Osgood-Schlatter Disease which is a bony protrusion below the knee which gets inflamed. He iced it after every game and took 3 advil up to 3 times a day for the inflamation. He continued to play through the pain and in about 18 months it disappeared. Evidently, it is most troublesome during the fast growing years. We have heard many stories from people who have had this even in college. Luckily, he has continued to catch and is a freshman in college and hasn't had any problems since 8th grade. Of course, you need a doctor to diagnose this problem.
My catcher daughter started feeling pain in her knees at about age of thirteen. Personal doctor and school trainer kept telling her it was just growing pains. Don't worry about it. She kept playing. Pain continued. Changed docs. New one told her she had a partial dislocation of knee cap. Gave her exercises to strenghthen muscles around knee. Helped enough to get her through high school but still some pain and knee cap kept sliding around. In college last year walked onto and made Div I team but increased workload finally made her quit as pain increased. College trainers told her it was nothing. Personal doc finally sent her to specialist who told her there was nothing wrong. Finally met another specialist through injury to son. He agreed to scope it and see what was what. When he got in there found a lot of scare tissue and growth under patella. Cleaned it out, patella slid perfectly into place and she is now pain free for the first time in 6 years. Has also talked to coach at her new school (Div II) and will be walking onto that one in the fall. She just wishes someone had believed her and been willing to do something years before.
My advise, if there is constant pain get it looked at NOW. Pain is an indication that something is WRONG and needs to be fixed.
About 2 months ago, my knees started getting really stiff, almost to the point that I couldn't move them very well, I couldn't get out of the car, and I could not catch without my kneesavers. Now, they are better, but they still get really stiff from time to time. Should I go see a doctor, because my parents refuse to take me because they just say "Oh, its just growing pains, youll grow out of it in a few years". Also, say I was at the store or something, and I try to crouch down to see something on the bottom shelf (just an example) it is really difficult, especially to get back up, sometimes I have to put both knees on the ground and use my hands to get up. IS this a problem, or just normal for a catcher?
