LOL, it's simple Scotty83 come on down and only play in GA tourneys, they almost all require a drop 3 for 14u

Amen a thousand times to this.  As a pitchers dad (safety concern not ERA) I am sickened that we value excitement over safety.  On my son's 13u team I shake my head at all those still swinging drop 8-10 bats.  My son swings drop 5 only cause its the heaviest you can go in the 1.15 bats.  But we have already discussed just using bbcor next year.  I don't want my son to have to live with nailing a pitcher in the face.  Plus its just stupid anyway.  Congrata you flung your drop 10 out there the last second and singled to right...

Every league I am familiar with require drop 5 at 14.  Tournaments may differ.

And here is where the whole "winning vs. development" starts.  At 13u, you want to be no lighter than -8 and transitioning to -5.  14u, use the -5 and transition to the -3.  But to do so, you better have good mechanics and it will cost you some hits/wins.

You said "Every league I am familiar with require drop 5 at 14".  So....PG and triple crown require a drop 3.

2019Son just finished his 14U year. Out here we didn't see anything but BBCOR -- across 60 games (some league, some tournaments). Doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but we didn't see it. And certainly 2019Son's coaches wouldn't have allowed it -- the whole idea is to get ready for high school ball.

But funny postscript on this: 2019Son has had his first few summer workouts for high school. They had one where the freshmen trying out were hitting, one after another, in front of the coaches. There were a few kids -- just a handful out of the ~50 freshmen -- who went up to the plate with 1.15 bats (-8 or -5 I think). Now it was off a pitching machine, so no danger to the pitcher, but, um, it didn't look good -- certainly didn't give the impression that they were ready for high school.

I think his point is that TC and PG are tournaments, not leagues.  He specified "Tournaments may differ".  Many leagues don't have the BBCOR requirement yet.

Yes.  My real point was that the drop requirements for 14u are rising -- no more using "hot" bats.

USSSA just required bats to have the stamp. This is where I saw most of the high drops. Game day had no requirements and BPA which we played the most had a drop 5 but no BBCOR requirement. It was funny watching teams with bat bags loaded with new mako bbcor bats but the entire team using an old Easton CNT drop 3. I might can understand some parts of the country but it Tennessee we have middle school ball that requires bbcor so for 14U which is rising freshman and sophomores. These kids have been swinging bbcor for 3 to 4 years already.

I also wouldn't have a problem with say 14U AA using lighter or hotter bats but majors should be swinging bbcor.

Maybe that's why our tournaments were full of teams from Georgia hahaha.

Drop 5 and not bbcor drop 3 are still "hot bats" especially in the hands of 6'3" 200 lb kids.

Yeah my son's coaches didn't allow it either. BBCOR or wood only. I'd say half the teams we saw were that way but the other half drove me nuts watching.
