Was this a team function with coaches in attendance?  The reason I ask is that if not, the coach had a responsibility to set rules and expectations. 

Yes.  They were not playing football, just throwing it.  He took a few steps to his right to catch it and when he planted he slipped and rolled it.  Just a total freak accident.  Could have been anywhere doing anything.

Ugh poor kid. IMO I see it as s** t happens.

Sorry about your son's Injury  .  We know he will have a great recovery that will make him even stronger for next spring.

Summer before reporting for Freshman year of College. Son travels down to Cincinnati to play in a tournament with his travel team. Comes home, goes to the bathroom. 

Comes out a few minutes later, says "its not a good thing if there is blood in your urine, is it?"

Turns out he had a collision with another outfielder. Both were diving for the ball. 

We took him to Children's Hospital in Columbus.  Turns out he had a lacerated kidney. If it was much worse he would of had to have it removed. Needless to say summer baseball was over. So while he was able to condition, no baseball activities.

He was ill prepared to hit during fall of his Freshman year. He lost some velocity off his FB. To say the least he hit like Poo (his term, not mine) that fall. And any hope as a two way player went with it. 

However he pitched well enough and was inserted into the staring weekend rotation. And was a starter all four years.

Tough luck but the timing seems to be a silver lining. Wishing him a full and speedy recovery!

Wow...hope it is only a minor set-back!

Summer of 2018, after my son's first year of college and after he decided to attend a big D1 (my Alma Mater) rather than play D3 baseball, his summer community college class was cancelled. Being a fine day, he called up a former GF and they went for a hike. As he was walking along a fallen log, it shifted, and he fell off, almost severing the tip of his middle finger on this throwing arm (on something; we'll never know). It healed fine in a few months, but that was it for playing another summer as catcher on his DC Wood Bat championship team. It also effectively ended his baseball career, for now at least, as he was just away from the game for an entire year and no longer is interested. Life happens. His accident could have been much worse.
