When our son was 15, playing with his Travel Team in a tournament, he was up to bat, and nailed a hard line drive, straight at the Pitcher's head. The Pitcher dropped, laying there motionless. The crowd went silent, as staff ran out to him. Our son thought he'd killed the boy. An ambulance arrived, took him to an area hospital, where they life flighted him to a larger hospital with a trauma center. The Pitcher remained in ICU for days. He survived the head injury that caused a concussion, swelling & bleeding of the brain. Upon being released from the hospital, the boy was privately home schooled for a month, before returning to school. Our son & the Pitcher kept in touch by phone and text messages. They both played football, and made plans to attend an NFL camp together.
The old saying...you gotta get right back out there. The coach put our son in to play... After an inning, he pulled himself from the remainder of the game. But, by the next game that day, he'd composed himself & got back out there...and pitched! Everything turned out ok, but was the scariest that we'd ever faced to that point.
