Guys, he may be the local grouch and he may have been a bench warmer earlier in life, but he does make some good points that we all would be wise to heed. In my community alone this year: consider the coach who was arrested for head-butting the umpire at his 10-year-old's game; consider the dad of a high-school player who has been charged with assault for hitting an opposing player's father with a bat; consider the select coach who is so fed up with a 4 to 5-tool player's malcontent parents that he refuses to have him back next year. And these are just the ones I've heard about. All the best to ALL LL teams who competed this season. If you take away the bad, you're left with a whole lot of good and many wonderful, life-long memories. But if we insist that this columnist is full of cr*p, we are sadly deceiving ourselves.
Yes, a coach paid a kid to plunk an austistic player....on his own team. Yes, I've seen a crazy mom dragged off the field in cuffs. Yes, my son's LL coach drank screwdrivers in the dugout on Saturday mornings. Yes, they use pitchers till their arms fall off. It's not a perfect system, but it's our system.
