My summer team, the Springfield Statesmen, asked for GPA and ACT scores so that they could be placed on our roster. More than once I had a coach turn up and say he wanted to see if someone with a 34 ACT could pitch, too.

Also, of course, TRHit and I talked extensively about grades before I played for him. If the coach is to be proactive about finding a school for his players, shouldn't he be well acquainted with his players' ability to be admitted/be eligible at prospective schools?

Do you have any advice for him? All he wants to do is get along...on a good team!

Thanks!

Hi,

A couple of points here guys regarding grades I am involved as a coach on a team where we ask about grades. Probably not the first question asked but a question which we do ask. The reason for asking is two-fold often times you can judge a kids character based on how serious he takes his schoolwork and secondly once you get to the 16u, 17u teams which are playing college exposure tournaments you want to have kids who are recruitable.

Regarding finding this player a team he may want to go to the Upper Deck Cougars website I heard their 17u team coached by Phil Zarcone may be in need of a catcher.

Hopefully he gets a on a team and can play.
dr9961,

So the 6'3" 93 lefty shows up at your tryout and he has a2.0 gpa and your travel program turns him down?

You could not get a player like that recruited at say a juco and have a chance to raise his grades as he grows up a bit? or maybe recruited for the draft which everytime he pitches would bring in plenty of recruiters to not only se him but also the rest of your players?

As far as character, if player struggles at school it is a lack of character? Maybe sometime a little immature or just plain struggles.
Hi here 2bagger,

In regards to your post you bring up some good points. As I mentioned we do ask about grades but as I wrote it's not the first thing asked and no we haven't turned a kid down because of his grades. In regards to grades being an indicator to character often times when a boy comes to an open try-out you really can't get a good gauge on what type of kid he really is and by asking how he does in school it may give you an idea of what his character or even dedication may be. Is it right or wrong I'm not really sure. This can be a great topic of discussion but I think none of us should be allowed to pass judgement on right or wrongs as to the selection process any team uses to select players. For example there are teams that have dress codes which go beyond the uniform. Is it right or wrong to not select or judge the character of a player whose hair may be too long or who may wear an earring? I'm sure it's happenned. Again is there a right or wrong way I don't know it's what works best for each team.

Final point let's not lose focus of the original post which is a kid looking for an opportunity. Hopefully he gets in touch with the Upper Deck coach I mentioned or some one else who can play him this Summer.
