My son (obviously a pitcher) hurt himself during his hs season and required shoulder surgery. The surgery was minor compared to what could happen these days, but he has now lost his entire "junior year" summer for showcases and recruiting. He plays for one of the better summer leagues here in our state and his teammates attended a couple of showcases/tourneys. I am beginning to panic as I'm not sure where he stands now on the recruiting scale. He will be back to throwing late Oct early Nov but is that too late??

Any words of encouragement/advice will be greatly appreciated. This has been the longest summer of my life!!

I feel his/your pain....but it's never too late. There is some "showcase" time left if you choose to go that route. Check with Perfect Game and others. Check with college winter camps and JUCO tryouts if you are willing to go that route. Play hard in the spring.

The most important thing is for him not to try to get back any earlier than his body will allow him to. My son missed his spring season due to an injury, and still isn't 100%. He went to a couple of showcases and didn't show as well as he could have as a result. Still, a number of calls. I think coaches are able to look beyond a lot of things and get to the heart of the matter concerning a player's ablity to play and contribute at the next level.

Follow your doctor's orders carefully. Have him refer you to a physical therapist specializing in sports related injuries. Have him start his throwing program with a pro if possible.

If he gets the exposure, however that may come about, and he has the talent, the interest will be there.

It's also very important to be honest with any interested parties regarding injuries. The fact that a player missed time due to an injury does not slam the door shut with most programs. Chronic injuries are another matter.

Just my opinion.
Pitchersmom - I agree with Its. While we all understand your concern, all is not lost. I too, would be very honest with coaches when they call (they'll know the story already). While he shouldn't push his rehab, if he can do things this winter and then make sure you follow up with any interested school with spring schedule, profile, etc. My '05's team had kids that didn't sign until the end of the spring season and summer ball teammates that didn't sign until this summer (with DIs). One had coaches come to eval during spring and the other was seen during the winter at a showcase. He's got plenty of time - just make sure you all do his part. It will be a busy year for you both!

There is more time than you think...

- November is early sign.

- There is a spring signing period.

- After the draft and signing of College Juniors and top high school recruits many schools have openings. This process runs right through the summer. One major Top 30 ranked DI school on the west coast is reporting on it's website that it signed 3 '05's THIS WEEK!!

Just make sure that you take care of that injury properly.
Just saw this thread and am encouraged by what I've read. My son, a 2007, underwent Tommy John surgery June 28 and will miss his junior year of HS both as a pitcher and 3rd baseman. Dr. Andrews predicts that he should be ready to DH next spring but no game pitching or playing in the field until next summer.

I've been agonizing over my son's predicament as I know that his junior year is key in recruitment. We've contacted those coaches and schools that had sent us those preliminary contact letters and are making some campus visits. Time will tell but thanks for the information.
