Loyola is a relatively small Jesuit school located just north of Los Angeles International Airport and immediately adjacant to Marina del Rey (if you know Los Angeles at all). The school sits on a bluff overlooking the ocean and marina channel.

It does not have the "highest" academic reputation but, IMO, it's a pretty decent school in that regard and seems to me to be respected well enough.

As mentioned above, it is in the West Coast Conference (all of the schools are Church affiliated I believe). Don't recall Loyola winning the conference lately (seems to be recently dominated by Pepperdine and U of San Diego) but they seem to always have a respectable program and several MLB players have come out of there. I see it as a pretty solid D-1 program especially given the level of competition on the west coast and in the SoCal area alone (USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, UCIrvine, UCRiverside, UCSB, San Diego St. U of San Diego, etc.)

The head coach is, I believe, a former USC assistant and I have to admit that I hear very mixed things about him (you either love him or......). The assisstant coach/hitting instructor is a former UCLA assisstant and again I hear you either love him or......I happen to know him a little bit and I think he's a great guy. Never have met the head coach.

The facilities in general are fine and I think the baseball field is quite nice. The school has no football program and so the money seems to get spread around through the various sports pretty well. The basketball program seems to be the highest profile there but, again, I think the baseball program is pretty solid.

My son's best friend attends school there and really enjoys it.

Bottom line, in my personal opinion, it is a place definitely worth checking out.

LMU is a school that definitely is worth checking out if you're son would attend a religious based school. I met their coach last summer, he flew up to watch one of the kids who plays with us pitch, and he was very straightforward, open and honest. He wasn't interested in the pitcher in question as the kid isn't all that big and he didn't think he was the type of pitcher he was seeking. He was straight up in telling me and the player's father that, and we both respect anyone who will be honest, even if you don't like the information. The coach indicated that he was looking for bigger pitchers and particularly those who could pitch above 90 consistently. He said they play a tough schedule outside of their WCC games and need pitching that can face USC, UCLA and other schools like that. I walked away favorably impressed with the coach.

I'm sure it worked out fine for everyone. The coach probably found a pitcher more to his liking, and the student athlete in question will be pitching for a WCC competitor of LMU, on a very substantial scholarship.
