Hello all. I saw a thread about making varsity as a freshmen and I have a question about that. I am also a freshmen that wishes to make varsity. I live in a small town in Wisconsin of about 2,000 people and my high school has around 545 students.
I am about 5'8 120 lbs, not the strongest but I have some speed. I throw around 70 mph. I can play middle infield or any outfield postition.
Fundamentally, I think I am good enough to be on varsity and I think I have more knowledge of the game then anyone else at my high school. The only problem I see is that I'm too small and not strong enough. I made Junior Varsity for basketball, and my coaches have said that I am mentaly ready but not physicaly ready. That's for basketball! I think I am 10x better at baseball than I am at basketball.
So I guess I want to know what you think about me playing varsity. I think I'm good enough but I don't know if I'm big enough. Thanks in advance.

Never let size be an issue for you. You are taller than my son and he's a D-1 SS. You are a little light though, so keep working out and hit the weights. That being said, TRhit is absolutely correct. Playing time and AB's are much more important than being on varsity. You have 3 more years for that. Plus if you are good on JV, they can always call you up. Just keep working hard and you'll get there.

There is no rush. So long as you're playing varsity by your Junior season, you'll be okay. I think over time you will gain physical size, just keep working on your game. I quoted the above, however, because that statement concerns me. You have a lot still to learn, so stay humble.
There is no rush into making a varsity baseball team. Scouts can't look at you until you are a junior. I know it you really would like to make varsity and I would like to make some recomendations. First off, don't worry about size. Size comes with time and is practically out of your control. You can gain weight by doing squats and other leg exercises. I got into plyometrics and gained nearly 10mph on my fastball. I'm also a freshman if you didn't know, but as of now, I have a different outlook. I am willing to play for the team that the coaches belive I should be on. If you don't make varsity and are playing jv or lower, prove to them that you can play varsity through work ethic, attitude, love of the game, skill, and most of all, HEART.
Everyone, thanks for your replys. I just have mixed feelings about this upcoming baseball season. Our school doesn't have that bad of a baseball program but it just seems like no one cares about baseball here like I do. I used to live in Kansas City where baseball was huge and the competition was a lot better. Our school does not have a freshmen baseball team so no matter what I will be playing on JV. Our sophomore class is horrible athleticly. They have one decent baseball player and I am just as good, if not better than him.
I have been told that I have a somewhat good chance of being on varsity. I've probably played just as many years of baseball than some of our seniors. If I did get moved up to varsity than I would get playing time most likely but I don't know what's going to happen. If you guys have any questions for me just ask. I might keep this thread alive and let you guys know if I do make varsity or not.
I am a junior this year and looking to make varsity for the first time- I'll keep you guys posted as well how it goes for me. We have a stud team this year, 11 returning varsity, three last year signed with D-I's, and two more this year. Also, the highlight of our varsity last year was that we beat Flanagan High School, in FLA (ranked the preseason number 1 in the country)
