I did not wish to appear disrespectful in the thread about Gunnar Sandberg, so I am posting this seperately...

This link is an article about Marin Catholic switching to wood bast and that the two schools they have played since the incident also used wood bats. One has declared that they will stay with the wood bats.

Marin Catholic has decided to play the rest of the year with wood. At this point, one other team has committed to play with wood the rest of the year as well. I cannot understand how or why the other schools in the league would continue to play with metal. God forbid, should another kid get hit, I'd be interested in the arguments they'd make in favor or their decision to play with metal.

We have, at least locally, a generation of coaches who played college ball and who have not ,with the exception of a few tournaments in their youth, played with wood bats and have no experience coaching how to hit with wood.

Jimmy thats a great point. The game of baseball is totally different with wood. Many of the coaches today are metal bat coaches. They do not know how to coach the game with wood. Moving runners , hitting behind runners , the importance of the cut game becomes more crucial , holding runners at 1st and 2nd , the bunt game both offensive and defensive , teaching hitters how to actually hit , the list goes on and on.

Quite simply the game is much more simple with metal. Its a totally different game. When you get beat 5-1 in a metal bat game you feel you were right there with a break or two. When you get beat 5-1 in a wood bat game you feel you were dominated. For those that have played and coached wood bat baseball its a no brainer. For those that never have they will never understand.
I applaud the decision by the schools switching to wood. Here is an excerpt from today's Marin newspaper (the Marin Independent Journal):

quote:
In Marin, a debate over the use of metal and wood bats continues, with seven out of 10 MCAL teams planning to stick with metal bats for now.

Most coaches, however, said they are open to making the switch to wood. When Marin Catholic hosts San Rafael High School on Tuesday, both teams will use wood bats.

"We'll go with whatever the league decides," San Rafael coach Stan Switala said. "But we are switching to wood for the MC game (on Tuesday)."

Based on what the coaches said Monday, when Justin-Siena visits Novato High on Tuesday, it will be among the first MCAL games in which one team, Novato, uses wood bats and the other uses metal. Tamalpais High will use metal bats when it hosts the Branson School, which will use wood bats, also on Tuesday.
