Love to hear from you Boomer...

CPLZ - must be out catching fish - maybe traveling to the beautiful Hudson Valley

Smokey - all his son did was win a national championship. Without his son, no national championship

soxnole - I see your cubby/white sox threads every once in a while. If the Indians were better, I might be a little more outgoing and comment more often Big Grin

woodrow - what can we say. I mean, what can we say!

Say hello to play baseball!

Coach had him throw 330 pitches in 11 days in his 3rd (vs. #4 Florida), 4th(vs. #19 Ohio State) and 5th(CG vs. Cornell) start last season and he has a significant tear in his UCL as a result. He tried to pitch 2 more games after a misdiagnosis but was obviously quite off his game. Missed the last 2/3's of last season.

Mets team Dr., David Altchek, gave him a 30% probability of being able to pitch his senior season.

2 weeks into a 6 week specialized rehab program and then into a specialized throwing program. We should no more in about 6 weeks...fingers crossed.

Do they allow redshirting at the Academy?

I am guessing no.

Correct, the answer is no.

Puts him in quite the pickle. Can't have TJ surgery and redshirt, so if he can't play, he probably wouldn't get drafted, which means he's thrown his last pitch in competition.
A thought....

Do they offer post-graduate degrees at WP?

Maybe he talks to the coach and sees if it is possible for him to graduate with his class this year while mending from surgery, enroll as a post graduate next fall (perhaps that is on your own nickel), and use the post-graduate year as his redshirt year. I realize that delays his military comittment by one year (maybe not if he is also employed as a military recruiter or other job that allows him to perform with the team) but perhaps it is worth a try - even if it is a long shot. Maybe an argument can be made that he would not be much good to the military anyways until his arm is fully healed. There might be other extraordinary cirmumstances (back door channels) that can be employed to make this happen. Another argument might be that it is in the military's best interest to allow Kurt to complete his obligation to the baseball team. I am sure we can come up with many of those reasons if necessary...

I am just trying to think outside the box. Maybe other posters can offer their advice as well. He can never go back and get a re-do on this. I think it is worth looking into whatever might be available. Maybe he has a military instructor who is fond of him and might chaperone his cause with the Academy. I'll help any way I can.
CD,
Thank you for the well thought out and obviously sincere concern and help.

The Army believes that the box is there for a reason, deviation from it constitutes violation of a direct order.

The thing to understand here is that West Points primary mission is to develop officers for the Army. They let nothing get in the way of the primary mission. They do have a "World Class Athlete" program where one of the recent grads holed up for a couple of years as a prospect for the American Bob Sled team, and now has been Honorably Discharged and is a member of the Detroit Lions practice squad, but that is for Olympic athletes only.

The Army will offer him post grad opportunities in shooting, patroling, leadership, explosives and several others in a nice beach location (sans water), in a few months. Smile

The military is very sensitive right now to how things may be perceived if they deviate from the mission. Kirk will graduate with a West Point degree, serve 5 years active duty and three years reserve, and be better for the experience and have a nice leg up in life. My advice to him all along was to use baseball to advantage himself as much as he could in life...I think he's done well in that regard.

Thanks my friend! Wink
