They have 20 guys in the transfer portal.  To me that is not a good sign.  Either they really over recruited or they are pretty ruthless on cutting kids, OR a lot of kids were really unhappy.  Most schools had more than normal after last year because they didn't have roster limits, but I remembered Missouri being one that had a lot.  Just looked again...its a lot.

A 2022 buddy/teammate of my 2021 son committed to Mizzou in mid/late August of this year.  It caught everyone here by surprise except for the kid and his family.  He had a really good summer with his bat and apparently Mizzou was watching at the right time.  I wish the kid the best, but I've never considered him a D1 caliber player let alone an SEC D1 caliber player.  If you believe the messaging the kid and family are putting out, he's getting a full ride and they 're interested in him at C, 3B and/or 1B.  But considering he runs a 7.7 60, I can't imagine any of those are an option for him at an SEC program.  Would an SEC team even allow a 7.70 kid to DH?  Again, I wish the kid the best, but I'm not sure there is a good argument that he doesn't end up in the portal after one year.  He and his family would not at all be comfortable with him sitting the bench for more than one year; if that.

Yeah, I was doing some research and it looks like there is something going on with Mizzou - and it's not necessarily a good thing!

In my opinion the coaching staff was in over their heads from day one.   They consistently cannot get the top 10 players in their own state much less surrounding states.  When you lose the recruiting battle for instate talent to a mid major and you are an sec school you are in trouble.    If you are not getting the best talent you better be great at developing players.  Facilities are the worst in sec.  no real plans to upgrade.  When you are playing from the bottom in sec it makes a long year which is other reason for turnover.  It is amazing how many players left there and went to other sec schools.

50+ man roster for a sport that features 10 starters at any given time. 16 freshman. I don't care how good they are, unless your kid is being offered 50%+ it's not a situation I would want to get myself into. If he has legit interest from Mizzou, I'm sure there are plenty of other highly competitive schools, especially mid majors who would be very interested.

Thanks for all the input.  It is not my kid interested (WAY too far from home) but he has a teammate that is interested and I was just trying to gather information for the kid and family.  They aren't very recruiting savvy (not that I am) but I knew I could get some input here along with the research I did to help them take a more informed look at the school.

Mizzou is headed in the right direction. The hiring of the new pitching coach should push the pitching staff forward. They have had lots of talent the past few years but have just underperformed. The school, town, and facilities are great. Although the baseball facility isn't quite up to par with the rest of the SEC, it is still very nice. The amount of turnover has a lot to do with covid resulting in some over recruiting. It happens at every big school, but Mizzou didn't cut any players last fall like most other schools did.

They may be headed in the right direction, but coming off a 15-win (8 in the SEC) season and a 9-year drought of not making the NCAA tourney, they'll need to get there quick.  DeLunas is a good hire but he's also Bieser's 3rd PC in 5 years and Bieser's assistant staff has been a revolving door of sorts in his 5 years there.  That lack of continuity leaves current player development and recruiting on uneven ground.

The incidents spurred on by the administration and faculty in 2015 has had a long lasting negative effect on Mizzou. Regionally there are many choices for D1 athletes that don't include the politics that Mizzou encouraged at the time and still lingers. The boys that I know that are committed, are going to schools without the additional drama. Arkansas and Missouri State have benefitted from the circus that Mizzou created. It's unfortunate, but alumni that I know have stopped donating and have relinquished their support for the university. I personally don't have a problem with the university as I have a 16 year old taking dual credit courses through Mizzou, but they kind of shot themselves in the foot.

Is this really the case? How many regional choices include competing in the SEC? One?

I have a hard time believing athletes with offers are staying away from a premier P5 conference to attend SLU and Missouri State. Especially considering the fact that these kids who are committing there now were in elementary school in 14/15.

Can we define “competing in the SEC”?  They have a conference winning percentage around .350 since 2015. How many times have you heard it here, don’t go play for a team that doesn’t win just to say you are P5, D1, etc….  Perhaps people actually act on those instincts…..

Competing in the SEC - a member school of the Southeastern Conference engaging in competition among other Southeastern Conference members.

I don't want this to turn into a defend Mizzou post because I have no affiliation with the school nor do I particularly care about the trajectory of their program. I'd actually have very little sympathy for a school with 50+ rostered players who brought in 7 transfers this summer. I was more commenting on the idea that potential SEC athletes are passing up offers from Mizzou to attend smaller regional programs. I don't buy it. Especially in sports outside baseball (basketball and football)

Either way, I don't care how bad their SEC record is, they're playing killers all season. Are they at the bottom of the pack in the SEC?  Of course. Stick them in the Horizon, OVC, or any of the surrounding conferences and they are at the top of all of them and we're talking about what a great mid major they are. I believe it's good baseball. I believe they play one of the 10 hardest schedules in the country. I just don't believe Arkansas Pine Bluff is poaching their guys.

It will be interesting on how they get down to the 40 player limit

Covid is causing an interesting game of roster management.

Note, based on insights below it seems they had a veteran time.

I know at least one 2023 that has committed to Missouri State in addition to the 2022's listed above. It's not the players that have a problem with Mizzou, it's the parents. And given the parents finance the player, they generally have a say in where they attend.

I can’t speak for now but the 2019 class they did not recruit the top players.  I think they got 1 of top 10 like number 8, and never made offer to 5 of them I know for sure.  Their facilities are way behind Missouri state.   You have to win the recruiting battle in your state as a P5.
plus they can’t compete.  UT got their Friday starter.   They hired a coach for small time money and won’t buy him out.  I think this is his last year.
