The Red Sox got the pitcher (Lackey) that's going to allow Buckholtz to be traded to the Padres for Gonzalez and move Youkilis to third. Cameron and Hermida will be adequate in left until a prospect comes along next year or another acquisition is made. I also believe the Sox are hoping Hermida comes off the junk pile to success like Ortiz did a few years ago. It's appearing less likely Bay is going to get a five year deal from anyone. While unlikely it's not impossible he'll be resigned by the Sox.

There were opinions on both sides about the O's adding Millwood for Ray, but I like the deal. Ray was coming off an injury and a poor season (which could probably be expected), although I do think he's a candidate to bounce back nicely. Sure, he could have been a cheap answer at closer for the O's, where they still have a hole. And he was still under club control without free agency for a few more years. Plus he's a local guy, which was kind of cool (William and Mary).

But I like the quality starter at the front of the rotation to help stabilize the entire staff. It does appear that Millwood is due for some regression, and their staff still doesn't compare to the CC/Burnett/Pettitte or Beckett/Lackey/Lester rotations of NY and Boston. But for the first time in years, you can see the makings of a pretty good lineup in places, and Millwood buys more time for development for their quality young starters. I would have preferred to keep Ray, but I think the O's did well for themselves.
Ray has had two years to bounce back and unfortunately is not progressing well in terms of being effective in his role. Perhaps a change of scenery will help. If not it's not a big give up, as high MPH relievers often have short shelf lives.

Millwood is a valuable guy, good for 200+ innings year after year, not going to win you a Cy Young or anything but a solid middle of the rotation guy. To me the O's got the better of this deal.
What was Jason Bay thinking?

Let's see, $15 million/year to play in one of the best organizations in baseball and be a star on a perennial contender,

OR

$16.25 million/year to play in one of the worst parks for hitters, for an organization that has been in disarray for years with no end in sight?

First of all, once you have $15m/year, do you even feel the additional money? Secondly, 4 years with the Mets could really drag him down, making his NEXT contract much less valuable. So he might lose all that money and more.

Not to mention the potential loss of playoff/World Series paychecks.
NL East, Phillies are looking like the NL Yankees and Mets are after Bay and others. Doesn't look good for the Braves who need hitting but can't afford the big name, long term contracts. They have prospects close (Heyward & Freeman) but don't appear ready to just throw in the towel yet. It may be interesting for Bobby's last year.
