Yeah, I think baseball is doing well to avoid labor issues. If the NBA fiasco results in a lost season, baseball (and hockey) stands to gain a few more fans starting in March with Cactus and Grapefruit leagues and the early part of the MLB season with games offering an alternative for the pro sports-hungry fan. College and HS baseball stand to benefit as well.
That being said, I'm not thrilled about the minimum salary raise. These days, anything that is likely to bump ticket prices is a bad thing.
And the new wildcard setup doesn't do much for me either. I don't necessarily mind the addition of two teams but the one game playoff is not a good solution. In '85, they went from a best-of-five to best-of-seven LCS scenario largely because they wanted to give teams a fair shake after playing a long 162 game season - plenty of playoff games to sort out the best team. OK, yeah, and to make more $$$. Now, after 162 games, you earn your way into the playoffs only to have it come down to a one game deal? Now a team will try to set up so that their ace throws in that game (team with best ace, not necessarily best team, probably wins and moves on) and then that team is at a distinct disadvantage going into the next round. At some point, they are going to have to shorten the regular season if they want to add playoff teams. I know that will have tremendous resistance with statistical records being one of the major hurdles.
