This is my son's first experience in the MSL. I have noticed that someone posts the occasional weekly update on this board. However, I wanted to provide a parent's point of view from this past weekend.

The first word that comes to mind: WOW!

There were easily over 50 college coaches and scouts in attendance. At some fields, the radar guns and crowds behind home plate were several rows deep. Several Div I schools: Univ of Arizona (2012 CWS Champs), TCU, OU, West Virginia, Univ of Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, Univ of New Mexico and Arkansas to name a few. It was literally a "Who's Who" of college coaches.

I actually overheard a coach in line at the concession stand tell another coach,"Man, these guys get it. This is exactly what we want to see this fall."

As each week has gone by, I have also noticed that the MSL guys have continually improved on communicating with the coaches and scouts. Example: This week they had the entire pitching rotation posted for every single team at every field. I thought this was a great idea!

The MSL guys have been wonderful. Very approachable and helpful. They really seem to enjoy interacting with the players, parents and coaches.

While I have seen some posts and comments about another type of fall scout league (PSL? TSL?), there is no way it's comparable. The level of talent and the amount of exposure in the MSL is absolutely amazing.

Great job guys!

Thanks for the good words LuisTiatsStache I am glad you are having a great experience. People don't realize how much work is put in Monday-Saturday to put this on. I am glad the Parents are liking the results. I have received many emails this year from parents just like you saying this has been the best exposure they have ever had.

We are not ready for the Week 3 recap but Week 3 of the MSL was one of the best turnouts in 7 years. It was like a class reunion and a who's who of big time coaches. Below is the list.

I went this weekend to watch a couple of my kids play. This was the first time I have gone. SHAME ON ME!!! This was a great venue for the kids to play in. I was amazed at the number of small schools present and the number that were watching the 16-17's.

It's easy to get excited about playing for the big boys in Division 1, but most of these kids will not get that opportunity. This is a great chance for them to get to extend their baseball lives.

Great to get to see so many old friends, except for Catcher. Never good to see him.
I agree with all the above, which is why I encouraged/supported the kids off our 17-18U team to play MSL this fall.

Several already have rec'd some quality contacts/interest from various schools/pro scouts listed above.

I appreciate MSL making this opportunity available to the best players, not just one club (DBAT). My guys can compete with the best, and this venue gives them the opportunity to showcase skills locally. And while some think the price is high, you would pay more than that to go to 6 different college showcases in 6 weeks in the fall, especially if you include out-of-town travel...and be seen by a LOT fewer people.

And like Vanlandingham states, only a select few kids get quality D1 offers or get drafted, but there are plenty of opportunities to play at the next level. With the smaller schools in attendance, then all these kids get a chance to be seen.
While I admit its great for your pitchers and catchers, some of your position players can go the season without a ball hit to them. The concept is great, and there are quite a few benefiting from it. They do have the scouts out for sure as promised and its well run, I just dont think there is a lot they can do for some of the position players.

Very true. I think this is the case in just about any scenario when you are playing games. Just no way to guarantee "touches." But I know at MSL (as they do at other showcases), you have a good round of "in/out". Also, if you are a batting against a high-end pitcher, and you have some quality ABs, that should get the attention you need... hopefully at that point, interested coaches/scouts can follow the player along (as a position player) for another week or two+.

Having been at MSL this year and last I do agree that the scouts focus attention on pitchers, but the next two weeks will involve a skills assessment for each player, which will help scouts evaluate the talents of position players as well. They will focus on many of the measurables, and the kids will be evaluated and ranked. Last year those evaluations helped my son get noticed.

I could not agree more. It has been a great all around experience for my son and well worth the time, effort and money.

On this same note, my son missed this past week due to being ill. One college coach inquired about him, not seeing him out there. Later that evening the coach made it a point to contact my son, spoke briefly and hoped to see him the next week. Class Act!
Oh, I think its a great league, dont get me wrong. I'm just not sure if our money wouldnt be better spent next year doing individual showcases. That is something we will have to think about next year, if the boy gets invited again.

I have heard that they can showcase what they got during in and out. Problem for the 10:00 games is that we havent seen a lot of scouts/coaches out there at 9:45 or earlier.

Like I said, I believe this is a great thing, just not sure if its a fit for us.
Newscout -

At this point, I would take him to some college camps with other scouts and coaches in attendence and spend my money there. Doesnt have to be a big showcase like in Florida. Jr. doesnt mind staying more local his first year or two in college and with the cost (even with a scholarship) of a big D1 he is looking at going smaller.

If paying a little more over the course of 5 weeks for him to be able to show his talents more at a camp then at MSL, than its worth the money, FOR US. At 4 weeks in, MSL hasnt been worth it FOR HIM. 3 weeks of games, one ball hit to him to field, and most of his at bats have been walks, with a couple of hits and a strike out.

I do think that this league is a great idea and is really benefitting some players, and the 18s I believe benefit even more. But its not a fit FOR HIM.

I'm not trying to bad mouth this league or Cade. I believe Cade is doing this for the kids. I'm just expressing our experience with it. Its not always going to be a fit for everyone.
The main reason why good players play is because they love the game and they love to compete playing the game.

I think College Camps, at least some of them, are great. However, it will never replace competition with and against the best available players.

This league has talent. Talent draws more talent. We have found that is what most taleneted players are looking for. The exposure becomes a byproduct of lots of talented kids who love playing the game in one spot.

Scouts and college recruiters go where there is talent. They can pick out talented kids very well.

Therefore, I would think the league would be a great fit for any kid with talent.

How is PG involved in this local matter? You only have 35 Texas kids on your 2014 rankings. I assume Texas may be a little unrepresented at that age level because not as many PG events here, but that is just a guess.

Did not mean to be difficult. Just curious as many have speculated that Texas may be underepresented. I probably should have asked question in different forum.

Aleebaba,

Not sure what you are getting at. But keeping things like baseball players a local matter is impossible. Is this forum for locals only? It's obviously a great event, but what would someone from Iowa know about that?

Actually we have 34 listed among the top 360 in the NATION! That represents about 10% of all the players in the NATION that are ranked. I'm sure we will be adding to the list as we see more players in the 2014 class. Some of the present kids might move up or down the list.

So we have 1 of every 10 highly ranked kids from the state of Texas. I know Texas is always one of the top states for talent, but is one of every 10 high school players drafted come from Texas? Of course not, one out of every 10 doesn't happen anywhere. My guess is that there are people in California and Florida that feel they are underrepresented.

BTW, Big events like the one mentioned are very helpful, especially for us nonlocals trying to identify the best prospects in the country. They don't always come knocking on our door.
I will ask again, just wanting an answer.....that's all.

What is the MSL college travel team? What ages are they, are they local jr college players. Where do they play at, I can't find a schedule, would be nice to see them play, see their velos, etc., so my son can see what it takes to play it this level. Who coaches this team, don't see any contact info.
Already been answered on another topic: But hear it is again we had 2 coaches that had 4 to 5 players each that could not play in the MSL for other reasons, so they combined also combined with some kids that did not make the MSL from the Tryout. Actually had 2 kids back out of the MSL to play on the travel team because schedule worked better. This team plays showcases on Saturdays and some on Sundays. They are going to Austin this weekend to play at St. Edward's University. Last week they played at NCTC in Gainesville.
I just want to tell the folks at MSL how much we appreciate all of your efforts associated with the Metro Scout League. It has been the best baseball recruiting decision we have made thus far in my son’s baseball career. MSL was the needed catalyst in moving things along in the recruitment process and we are getting close to making our college baseball decision. Our only regret is that we did not participate in MSL last year.

I would recommend this event to all players who have a sincere passion to play baseball at the next level. It is a competitive venue and I have never seen so many scouts at one place at one time. If your son needs another look from a scout this is a perfect place for it.

Job well done MSL.
