Was driving my kid to a BB workout and a Billy Squier song came on. I started to wax philisophically to my son about back in the day, driving in my buddy's brothers Corvette with Billy blasting on the speakers, and chasing the young ladies. He actually liked it!!
So being smooth as I think I am, I turned him on to some BTO and Grand Funk Railroad.

Last I heard, he was on the phone with my cassettes in hand saying "I'm coming over you gotta hear this stuff". Does that mean I ain't gettin the goods back?

I'm just guessing here, but in my opinion, and experience with my own kids, high schoolers today have more favorite bands from the past than at any other time in history.
Popular bands at my son's high school include AC/DC, Ramones, OLD Green Day (they don't like the new stuff), Skynyrd, etc etc. It's because so much of the music today is pop-fabricated krap or every-song-just-like-another hip hop.
The old stuff resonates still........

Whenever music comes up, I have to promote one of the best relatively unknown bands of all time, from Nashville, Jason and the Scorchers. Best live show I have EVER seen. They are no longer together, sadly. Their guitarist, Warner Hodges, is widely held by people in the know as one of the best all-around (mainly rock) guitarists of all time. Phenomenal. Pick up their live CD, "Midnight Roads and Stages Seen", or better yet pick up the VHS of the same show at Nashville's Exit-In Club. My kids LOVE this band, and Warner Hodges is a new guitar hero around our house. My fingers are crossed that they'll reunite someday......and come play a USO gig in Korea!!

My son is really into the disco I listen to, Earth, Wind, and Fire and others. However, the song he loves that kills me is "Tarzan Boy" by Baltimora. Good lord I didn't even like that in the 80's. Lotta kids around here like Ozzy and Metallica. I think alot of it comes from the movies today, and they use alot of 70's and 80's music that kids pick up on.
Oldest son, baseball player, is into country, it goes with his truck.

Youngest son, track kiddo, is into AC/DC, Styx, Queen, CCR, BTO, etc. so much so that I dug out my old albums and for Christmas we got him one of those 4in1 retro record players and he loves "spinning the vinyl". Classic look on his face when I got out my old 45's and he wondered how that worked.

I am in the process of trying to turn him onto Mike and the Mechanics, Adam Ant, Scandal, Heart, The Doors, the Cars, throw in some disco with Average White Band, The Commodores, EWF and the list goes on and on.........

If only I had kept my 8 track player..............

Both my kids have their Ipods loaded with current and classic rock. My daughter is into the garage/underground rock of today. Although, one of her all time favorite bands is Led Zeplin, which is an excellent choice.

Unfortunatly, neither one is into Jazz, but they hear it all the time. Just about every night either a CD is on or I have the radio on tuned into an NPR Jazz station.

Cathchersdad-Tubes-WPOD, I saw them live in Boston in 1975, great show.
