Just watching sports "big brother" ESPN. They're going to discuss who should win the AL MVP. Their choices tonight are Johann Santana, David Ortiz and Derek Jeter. I like the inclusion of Santana because he is simply the best pitcher in that league and has put up tremendous numbers. But what about Dye and Morneau? Chicago's own Phil Rodgers is also a writer for ESPN.com and he says that he will vote for either Dye or Morneau if the season ended now. I don't think Phil has a national following, however.

IMO, the Bristol, Conn. sports mega-consortium is controlling all of what we watch, listen to and talk about. I guess based on that, ESPN has been wildly successful. I'm really tired of their over-the-top football programming which is based soley on what they just paid to broadcast MNF, pandering to the fantasy football junkies and all the rest. The NFL has played ONE week of real football and that's all you hear on any of their programs. It is like baseball has been buried from now until the playoffs begin. They have become a true monopoly.

Ortiz has no business on that list. Just more of that East Coast Sports Network stuff. Jeter is the real thing this year and so is Santana. I have to agree with Rosy about Moreau and gasp...choke....stutter...Dye.

Yes, ESPN is too much, just like Nike and Adidas influencing HS and College Atheletes. Too much power and money to stop I'm afraid.
Midlo, I am with you as I really like the way Mauer plays the game and would consider him one of the best as he is coming up in the league. I think where he gets left off in this discussion is some of his offensive numbers, leads the league in average, but has only aa home runs and 78 rbi where Dye has the 325 ave along with 41 home runs and 112 batted in. I also agree with fball in regards to ortiz, love to wacth him hit but I think you have to own a baseball glove to be in the running. JMO
I just don't see how you can seriously consider Jeter and then not consider Mauer. While I respect what Jeter does, Mauer's offensive numbers are comparable or better, and he's playing the most grueling position on the field!

Just another (yawn) example of how the major media markets can dominate these awards. If Jeter were in Minnesota and Mauer in NYC, the hype would be off the charts for Mauer.
Midlo Dad,

I like Joe Mauer as much as the next guy but he isn't even in Derek Jeter's neighborhood. Mauer has plenty of time to win a MVP award but I, for one, would have no problem seeing Jeter get the award this year. I think with all the injuries the Yankees have had that Jeter has had arguably his finest year yet. And remember, he gets better in the playoffs.
David Ortiz has no bussiness on the list? 285 48 Bombs and 127 rbi's doesnt belong on the mvp list? am I missing something .highest OBP ever for him this year as well

will he win it? maybe not...but he should be on the list

I forgot who it was on espn...but they said Mo Rivera has been the MVP of the yank's over the years...because he makes it a seven inning game...while other teams go through cardiac arrest in the latter innings, the yanks never have to worry!
I hear you that there are other players in the race...but I still think Ortiz is in the top 5.... How valuable is he to the sox?

2005 Alex Rodriguez
2004 Vladimir Guerrero
2003 Alex Rodriguez
2002 Miguel Tejada
2001 Ichiro Suzuki
2000 Jason Giambi
1999 Ivan Rodriguez
1998 Juan Gonzalez
1997 Ken Griffey, Jr.
1996 Juan Gonzalez
1995 Mo Vaughn
1994 Frank Thomas
1993 Frank Thomas

Those are the last 13 al MVP's...Ichiro did it with 8 HR 70 RBI 56 Steals and a 120+ runs....but history shows hr's and rbi's....so how is ortiz not in the hunt?

The others mentioned are all in the hunt but Big papi has done to much...and no im not from the east coast!
I generally don't think Pitchers or DH's should be on the MVP candidate list, IMHO. However, if you are to consider Ortiz, then why not Thomas? Ortiz is on a team 10 games out, Thomas has helped lead his team into first place. Shouldn't we consider the overall impact a player has had on his team? While Ortiz has better individual numbers than Thomas, the A's would not be in first without Big Frank.
Barry Bonds is an A** H*** it never eliminated him from the race!

When they announce the MVP...do they ever mention fielding percentage...or any other categories besides BA, HR, R, RBI and SB? Thats usually the case then a dh is fair game...some say its harder to focus when you dh!

The Big hurt should be in the running as well...the bosox are 10 games over which isnt to shabby....the rangers werent stellar when arod won!
I just don't think you can give an MVP to some one who let's a guy tag up from about 220 feet away, Who does not get into throwing position,in a close game. In fact a Mvp in my book's will get into a throwing position all the time, no matter what the score. Ozzie is a better man than me, cause on that play , I call time out and put Herm Schnider out there and get that dog out of the game! And as for Pod's stopping just before he got to third, not his fault, I think he broke one of his high heel's just before he was going to slide.
On St. Louis Sports Radio, they presented some interesting insights. Naturally Howard is going to win which is a real shame given that Pujos was a lock before he was injured. Given the same number of games and playing at the clip he was, his stats would have far surpassed Howards.

What I don't understand in all of these stats wars between parties that support both individuals is why defensive stats are left out. Pujos is by far the better fielder. Pujos had 6 errors and Howard had 14. Howards 14 errors ranks him second to last in fielding for starting National League firstbasemen.

Offensively, does MVP come down to who hits the most runs? That seems to be the case here. If not, how do you then justify that Pujos struck out 50 times and Howard struck out 181 times. Pujos' batting average with runners on base is far superior. Pujos' 19 walk off homers is also #1 in the Majors. Howard isn't close.

Keep in mind I'm a Cardinals fan and so...

Coach B,

If we didn't already know it, your comparisons speak volumes. IMO, Albert Pujols is the best player in the major leagues. He is the player who would be chosen first to start a franchise. He has made himself a terrific defensive 1st baseman and is a total class act. He personally saved LaRussa's *** at the end of the season.

Nothing against young Howard and the great year he's had, but I'd vote for Pujols in a minute.
