I am thrilled that Coach Tim Scannell of Trinity University has been selected as the winner of the Skip Bertman award as the National College Coach of the Year.  This is a wonderful award reflecting amazing work done on the field in building his program to National prominence.

It is also a wonderful reflection for D3 baseball and the quality of coaching and play which exists. Beginning with our son, Coach Scannell has had many players drafted and probably is on par with more than 50% of the D1 programs nationally, with his numbers. After knocking on the door nearly every year since 2002, just like Coastal Carolina did yesterday, Trinity finally knocked down the wall and won the D3 CWS in 2016.

I am very proud our son played for Tim and will be forever grateful of the relationship they have developed and the opportunities Tim brought our son through baseball, which have lasted well after graduation from Trinity.

For many who might be considered "late bloomers" or something similar, few in all of college baseball "develop" player skills and talent over 4 years at a level better than Coach Scannell.

I am thrilled for Tim and his beautiful wife ( a cancer survivor) and his great family.

For those who have so much enjoyed the Coastal run and "grinding," these words on college scouting and and recruiting from Coach Scannell ring familiar:

"The type of recruits we are drawn to are the gritty, “dirt bag” ball players. How hard does he play the game? Does he love the game? Does he run on and off the field? You can’t fake passion. A passionate baseball player stands out on the field and that is what we are looking for."

Nice infielddad - I know from talking to you over many, many years that you and your son and family have nothing but the utmost respect for Coach Scannell.  Through you, I feel like I know him like my neighbor!!

This is a wonderful honor for him - and a wonderful affirmation of all that you have told me for a very long time.

In today's terms - #SimplyAwesome!!

infielddad - thank you for posting this.  Wonderful congratulations go out to Coach Scannell and all the Trinity family.  I think your comparisons between Coastal and Trinity are spot on.  I wondered if Coastal might now be able to attract a more pedigreed type of ballplayer although I know some close to the program who think that might be a mistake.  I think both programs will remain successful if they keep recruiting the kind of guys (dirt bag types") they have been recruiting.  It's hard to argue with success.  Both of these programs have been knocking on the door way longer than their recent success.  Winning the title is obviously wonderful but both programs have been winning for a long time nonetheless.

Thanks IFD for posting this, Coach Scannell really deserves this. The recruiting piece will likely be missed by folks here so I will repost just it in the recruiting thread as it is a road map for a player looking to be recruited at any level, and also shows that the top D3 programs recruiting formula matches that of high academic D1's in approach.
