Maybe the wrong place to post this, but figured it would be the best place to start.

My 13 year old son has been given an opportunity to do some auto racing. There will be some races that award checks and/or cash for finishing positions. Amounts should not ever exceed $250. Is there any chance this could cause him to ineligible for a scholarship in the future?

I've been looking at the NCAA website all day, and haven't been able to reach anyone on the phone. Any help or advice would be great.

Thanks,

CWM

Don't quote me but since it is not money earned as a baseball player it should be treated as just a summer job. Some 13 yr olds have newspaper routes around the hood, and some drive around the 1 mile oval.

However, I do find it rather funny that Dad has to give Jr a ride to work where the kid while sitting on a phone book breaks all traffic laws known to man. IMHO, that baseball future is being put at risk with one of the most dangerous professions known to man at even the professional level.

I seriously hope this is a poster who is looking for "board entertainment" and is not serious about this irresponsible endeavor. JMO

Thanks for the replies guys. I had heard that as long as money earned is not directly related to the sport you're involved in it would be fine.

RZ1, Thanks for your concern. I would never use this message board for mere entertainment. I turned to hsbaseballweb because I felt certain that I could get an educated response to a question I needed answered somewhat quickly.

By the way my son started racing when he was 5. He started playing serious baseball at 10. Racing related injuries........0. Baseball injuries....broken finger (ground ball at third), broken thumb (stepped on by a baserunner), broken arm (collision at homeplate), and as always the usual bumps, scrapes, and bruises.

Not saying that racing isn't dangerous. But so far both my kids have been hurt more playing ball than racing.

CWM,

Thanks for the background and update. No intent to be hostile on my part. Sometimes I can be a little over the top when it comes to straight forward answers, my opinion, and even worse I would rather be thrown under a bus than listen to a fabricated situations. In this case, you straightened it out and explained what we didn't know. Now everyone is a little smarter, and I wear the tire tread of the bus on a brand new shirt. So far it's a great day Big Grin

The hangup in the whole deal with Bloom, was endorsement money, not the prize winnings. In one of the rare instances, I would side with the NCAA on that one. Opening the door to accept endorsement money in another sport is the slippery slope. Next thing you know, they'll have endorsements for cup stacking and all the participants will be 6'4", 255 lbs. and run 4.6 40's.
