My son is a senior this year and transferred his freshman year from another Texas school. The previous Texas school put "honors" kids on a bumped up curriculum. Needless to say, my son took English 1 his 8th grade year. NCAA requires that Div 1 players have 4 years of High school English-no junior high grades accepted. We are now in a smaller district that does not offer an English 5 course. He has taken English 2,3 and this year, it will be English 4 in High School. The high school counselor called NCAA 3 times and basically got 3 different answers as to what to do. The "for sure" thing to do was to retake English 1 his senior year. Another NCAA person stated that colleges make waiver requests all the time on behalf of players that do not have all their academic courses. I know that if you graduate early, you do not have to get the 4th English, but is it true that if a Div 1 college wants a player, that they can request a waiver so that it does not matter that the player does not have the 4 courses of English?

The course that was taken in 8th grade, even though a HS course, will not count for the Clearinghouse........it is great when school systems encourage high achievers to take some HS classes early, but it doesn't always benefit them when it comes to Clearinghouse certification.

There should be one or two English electives for the student in question to take, even at a small HS.
Definitely check into what other courses, offered at your son's high school, will count as an English credit. The Clearinghouse has a list of acceptable courses, for each high school, and what they are credited against (English, Science, etc). My son's Public Speaking class was considered an English elective by the clearinghouse. We check every course before he schedules it to ensure that he will be qualified when the time comes and you'd be surprised which courses are listed as acceptable and which are not. You can get your school's clearinghouse id number from your guidance department and check it out.

TR - with regard to Computer Science, it used to be a graduation requirement at the high school level, but the formal course is now being taught at the junior high/middle school level in most school districts, and a lot of kids have had computer exposure in elementary school or earlier. In out neck of the woods, the last graduating class allowed to claim Computer Science as a graduation credit was the class of 2005.
Is there a community college near you? My kids took English their senior year at the local CC and received high school and college credit. The clearinghouse accepted this. FYI, they also took Economics and Government. This was a way to get a few college credits out of the way and count in HS. They also were less expensive than taking them at a 4 yr. school.
My son is taking the dual credit English this year (that's the English 4 - counts for high school and college). One of the NCAA reps did say that journalism might be considered if the counselor went back in and listed it under the approved English courses. The rep said it was just a case by case approval and it was not guaranteed. An independent study could also be considered, but again, only on a case by case review and it would also have to go through the local school board. Seems like the only option right now is still to retake English 1 so that it will fall into the courses taken during the 9th-12th grades.

So my question still remains, have any of you heard of colleges asking for waivers so that the players are not required to fulfill all of the course requirements set forth by the NCAA?
I know things have changed but there are some courses that can replace credits with English.

Some 8th graders take a course and then take a test for credit so they do not have to take the class over. For example mine took algebra 1 in 8th grade, passed the credit by exam test and was allowed to move directly into Algebra 2, but was not allowed to use algebra 1 for the clearinghouse.

Clearinghouse requirements are different from high school and university requirements, make sure you do not get confused. Colleges will waive admission requirements (for example 2 years of language vs. 3) butI don't think they would mess with clearinghouse and NCAA requirements (and vice versa).
By the 11th grade son had met his English requirements for clearinghouse before taking Eng 4. Check again, make sure that you are just not confused with what a Div 1 university requires and your state requires for graduation.

lovethatbaseball,
I did not say they accepted credit by exam. I know the English 1 won't count taken in junior HS. But this happens often, there has to be something allowed for replacement, so he does not have to repeat it.

I am not understanding why a core English course (look up allowed courses for your particular HS)cannot be substituted for English 1. For example, if you go and click on core courses allowed in English, many different courses come up, not just English 1,2,3,4. The reason this comes to mind, my son took speech 1 and 2 (1/2 credits each)which counted as a full credit towards English. By junior year without English 4 he had satisfied his English credits for the clearinghouse. He only had to take English 4, and I remember the guidance counselor telling him he could substitute if he wanted to because he had passed the testing for English for graduation in our state. However, not all Div 1 schools accepted speech as a credit in English and he was not into American Literature. Eek This was my understanding at the time. What I am saying is that it has to be 4 units in English, not necessarily English 1.

I am not trying to be difficult, just helping as the Clearinghouse and the NCAA, admission requirements at individual schools are so confusing.

TPM,
Thanks for your help. I understand what you are saying. However, we are in a small school district and it does not offer speech 1 and 2 - only speech 1. The counselor went into what our school has listed under the English requirements for the clearinghouse, and right now, it is just English - no speech, no journalism, nothing but English. All that our school offers is English 1,2,3,4 (regular and dual credit for English 4). The clearinghouse did tell her that Journalism could be put under the English, but it would have to be approved by the clearinghouse and it was not guaranteed that it would be approved. I really appreciate your input, and I may ask her about the speech 1 and if she could get that put under the English. If so, then we would only be 1/2 credit short! Mmmm. Anything else that you can come up with would be appreciated! Thanks!
I was giving speech as an example only, for certification from the clearinghouse, but possibly NOT for Div 1 criteria for admissions. There is a differnce, pm me if you have questions.

You can go on to the site yourself to see what is offered by your school as an English requirement.

If there is nothing else, guess it's English 101 again.
