DIII Administrative Committee approves blanket waivers for participation

Measure would apply if teams lose half or more of their seasons

Division III student-athletes will not be charged with participation for the 2020-21 season if their team can complete only 50% or less of the sport’s maximum contests/dates of competition due to the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Division III Administrative Committee on Wednesday approved a recommendation from the Division III Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement to provide a blanket waiver in all sports that are unable to reach the 50% threshold, providing student-athletes with the option of extending their participation.

The committee noted that schools may be forced to shorten athletics seasons due to health and safety concerns, as well as related administrative concerns. Amending the criteria for a season-of-participation waiver would ensure student-athletes have four meaningful seasons of participation opportunities. The proactive blanket waiver allows student-athletes to make informed enrollment decisions prior to the academic year.

Student-athletes whose teams complete more than 50% of the sport’s maximum contests/dates of competition during the 2020-21 season would not be eligible for the blanket waiver, regardless of whether the student-athlete competed in 50% or less of the season.  However, individual waiver requests could be pursued on a case-by case basis.

The committee also approved a second recommendation from the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement to approve a blanket waiver permitting student-athletes to receive a two-semester/three-quarter extension of eligibility if the following conditions are met:

  • The student-athlete was unable to participate in their sport during the 2020-21 academic year due to the impact of COVID-19, or the student-athlete’s teams completed 50% or less of the sport’s maximum contests/dates of competition during the 2020-21 season due to COVID-19.
  • The student-athlete was otherwise eligible for competition during the 2020-21 academic year.

By approving a two-semester/three-quarter extension, schools no longer would need to file an additional extension of eligibility waiver if a student-athlete seeks to maintain full-time enrollment.

Both blanket waivers will apply to all sports during the 2020-21 academic year.

So let me get this straight if d3 schools cancel their 2021 Spring baseball season players get that year back.  So for the 2022 season you could have 6th-year players with a year left and 5th-year players with 2 years left, you will have seniors with 2 years, juniors with 3 years remaining and sophomores and freshman with 4 years.  This is getting complicated......

I have two D3 kids ('21 and '23) and a likely 3rd who would be a '26.  They could all three be playing in the spring of '23.  I can barely handle two concurrent tuitions.  Now I get a third?  So much for family planning.

I thought it was a mistake to grant an extra year for this past season.  This decision is just nuts IMO. Totally understand it, but don't think it's the right way to go. It will just extend the effects of COVID.  Some things you just can't control.  Move on.

I'm sure you realize that a kid can ignore this and graduate in 4 years.  Just because something can be done doesn't mean it should be done.

This is getting ridiculous.  This goes against my understanding of the NCAAs D3 charter.   I just don't understand this decision at all.   Moving on.....

The NCAA is a joke of an organization. They have pretty much gotten it wrong at every turn. Their decisions, while they may appear to be empathetic, don’t really benefit the student athletes - they benefit the schools.

Older D3 son injured just pior to start of 2019 SR. Year so came home and played at a local D3as a Grad transfer. Then covid cut that season short. Thought it all over now the local  D3 coach asked him if he was going to come back as he now has another year and will finish up grad school. Why not he tells me.

Younger NAIA son redshirt Sr now talking about a grad year 6th season. He is anticipating the NAIA following suit.

Interesting.  I was thinking about D3 athletes.  Certainly there will be some who keep playing into grad school.  I wonder how many might stop playing now, before they have even used all their eligibility?  It hasn't been easy to keep in shape, keep training, keep playing, this spring and summer, and with no fall practices for many, and possibly no spring next year, some might decide just to hang it up.  It's a lot of effort to go through, just to play a year or more from when you last played.  So I wonder if the numbers might balance out in the end (of course, this could apply to other levels also).
