Hello! My son just found out last night that his whole staff is not returning to his school (D1 in NC).  Will take a while to hire a new coach and the portal will close on the 28th. We don’t have any portal experience.  He is a freshman. Switch hitter that started at every infield position but pitcher. Any advice etc would be appreciated! Feel free to DM. Thanks!

Thanks guys! He is supposed to get more info from the school today.

I would advise your son (or a 3rd party) to reach out to any other schools that recruited him before he committed. Assuming he has interest in those schools. With the number of players in the portal increasing every day it would be best to have a handshake agreement beforehand (if possible). Given the circumstances I think it would be prudent to enter the portal with the caveat that you should be able to return to your current school if the new coaching hire is a good fit. With a year of playing time under his belt, and the ability to play multiple positions, your son is more marketable than most players in the portal.

I don't know the details of why they left but I would imagine his future is dependent on a few factors

1. Where the now former staff is headed and why they left. Funding an issue? University's commitment to the program an issue? Better position? For the whole staff to leave I would imagine the other end completely failed them. He needs to find out.

2. What his relationship is like with them. Even if they don't want to take him - they have a pretty good idea of his playing abilities and where he fits. They should be willing to make calls on his behalf, or at the very least provide an accurate assessment of where he belongs.

3. How well he did this season. I would imagine there would definitely be in conference opportunities if he had a somewhat decent freshman year.

4. Who they hire. Lower division coach making a leap? Assistant from a stronger program taking a HC job. The way those two construct their rosters is going to be completely different.

5. How badly your son wants to remain at the school. Anticipate a chunk of guys leaving.
