Just curious if others have adopted similar rules.

In AZ, a new run rule was introduced in the last week. If the team not in the lead is losing by 15 or more runs after four innings, their head coach can decide to end the game.

A similar choice was made by a softball coach tonight(AIA umpire sitting with me ensured the rule includes baseball). With two outs in the bottom of the 4th, down 18-1 and lots of subs, the visiting coach agreed to continue. It was an 18-4 final, so his team got a bit of lift at the end.

This can be kind of sticky because some umps want you to state at the beginning of the game if we are playing 15 after 3 and my response is, I don't know, I'll let you know if we get there. Yours is better-stated, just let the trailing coach decide if it's over or not.

Rarely happens in baseball at our level, but I watched several softball games where the offense plays it straight up for a couple innings and then its 20+ to nothing. At that point, nobody is learning anything. Batters are bunting the ball back to the pitcher, batters advacing one base on the resulting error. When you can't enjoy watching a win, something needs to change...
