Yes, I'll be really interested in his assistant coach hires.

He's a great guy, he knows baseball, but the step from "unpaid assistant coaching hitters" to college head coach is a pretty big step in one year.

It's not as simple as moving from first base coach to third base coach...

I will say, I thought Dave Bingham was a very solid guy and I really liked him. I'm sorry to see him go, if that happens.

Do you still see any Texas kids wanting to go to Nebraska now that they are in the Big 10? I dont know if I see that many still going to Neb anymore. I know at Mizzou we seem to get a lot of Texas kids for football and baseball since we are in the Big 12.
Time will tell of course. Some kids may be turned off by the fact you have to win the conference to have any chance at post season play.

If kids from the south stop coming to the Big Red I think that is more a reflection on their thoughts of Big 10 baseball's perceived strength vs. Nebraska itself because they have great facilities.

He was an unpaid assistant because he probably didn't need to be paid. Smile
The program has been looking for someone who could develop players for the next level and national recognition (this is a big draw for many recruits) and he proved he could do it. I think they had all intentions to hire him when they let the coach go, but just had to go through the motions.
He probably knows nothing about recruiting, he doesn't really have to, he'll hire someone for that job.
Your son should feel most comfortable with the guy who he will work the most with (depending upon his position), HC are the figurehead, in the better programs they deligate and let their coaches do their thing, that's why so many successful programs later churn out HC.

JMO.
TPM: You are most likely correct. He moved back home and clearly wasn't hurting for money.

When son visited, it seemed there was some ackwardness among the coaching staff like, "who is this guy and what is he doing here"

He had tested their bats to pick the best BBCOR bat vendor. He told some great stories from his playing days. As a Red Sox fan, I was interested to hear that the worst fans in the AL were in Tampa Bay and not Boston or New York.

But what I really liked (for others who might be considering) were the facilities, the academic program and thier commitment. They had their whole support staff there on a Saturday morning to talk to us. A total of two hours of discussions. I was sold...

Much more impressive than the walk by tours where the bullpen catcher points to an empty office and says, "that's where our academic guy sits"

Before we left, we knew Erstad played football. It was only he who said it wasn't that big a deal. We also knew a bunch more.

They have (had) a quality thing going, I hope they keep it up.

JMoff,
Those type of things that impressed you and your son, should be considerations when making the decision.

That would be the effort that they made to sell their entire athletic program, not just one sport, or just about sports.

If your son is interested, now that you know who the coach will be, contact his office. They most likely will contact him anyway if they had him on their list, they must leave all recruiting contacts in house.

I like Mike Anderson, he's a good coach and a good man. Evidently, someone thought the program was headed in the wrong direction and things needed to change. Unfortunately they have finished at the bottom of the Big 12 the last three years. They just haven't been very good the last few years. Guess that trumps the College World Series team Anderson coached.

They did have a great thing going when Van Horne, now head coach at Arkansas and Childress, now head coach at Texas A&M were there. Anderson was an assistant (Van Horne HC) back then.

Mike Anderson should be able to find a good coaching job. Over all, he has a great resume if you take away the last three years.
