I spoke with Coach Kingston this evening...phone lines have been jammed for most of the day.
The players were just moving in this weekend, only to turn around & immediately evacuate. I hope they didn't unload anything!! Classes were to begin Wednesday. Now they are hoping for Thursday.
We are waiting to here if our official visit is going to be postponed from Sept. 2 to later in the month.
It is going to be catastophic.
I was in Corpus Christi during Carla, back in 1961. Just devastating seeing homes & hotels that had slid off into the Gulf & sailboats blown into uptown.
Prayers for all those that couldn't make it to higher ground.

And the worst of Carla was in Galveston, Texas City, Houston, etc. (the high side of the storm). Carla was one of the worst.

Looking around at all the debris here on eh ground from Katrina's visit to South Florida. Went to the post office today and teh front door was missing.
Insignificant compared to what is going on in LA,MI, FL panhandle or AL. My heart goes out to them and very concerned about friends and friends sons who live in that region.
East Atlanta neighborhood wiped out by a tornado last night.
So heartbreaking.
The Governor of Louisiana has ordered the immediate evacuation of the entire City of New Orleans saying it will take weeks to dry out and months before it is ready to re-inhabit. New Orleans is closed. They are going to empty the Superdome and move everyone out of town.

I have not been able to reach anyone connected to the school. Conference USA has been good enough to set up a seperate phone line for Tulane personnel & students to contact one another.
The football team is here in Dallas & practicing at SMU.
275 of the 400 total student athletes are guests of Georgia Tech.
Someone said it may be 3 months before the campus is ready for students. I'm not sure of this rumor at all, that seems like a long time, but given the looks of things on CNN, it may very well be.

Tulane University
Current Status

August 31, 6 p.m.

Things continue to be unstable in New Orleans, although there is hope that we have experienced the worst. We continue to put the safety of students and employees first. We are working around the clock to bring continuity to the university and to re-establish our presence, however much of this is dependant on the city of New Orleans and Mother Nature. One of our greatest frustrations is our inability to communicate with our larger community due to the failure of all utilities, including e-mail and cell phones. Over the next few days we will have a better handle on the timeline for our recovery. In the meantime, nearly all of our students have been relocated to their home communities or other safe locations under our supervision. All of our residence halls are secure and the contents appear intact. I know all of our students are anxious about our re-opening date; again, in the next few days we will be able to speak more confidently about a start date for the fall semester.

The faculty, staff and students of Tulane University, especially in our medical and public health schools, have proven to be an extraordinary group who have not only conducted themselves with patience and decorum but have reached out to others in acts of exemplary valor in situations small and large.

Tulane University is a great institution with loyal students, faculty, staff and alumni. We will recover from this event and be stronger because of it. I will be in touch as we know more and the situation develops.

Heard from my daughter earlier today. She is a student at U of Memphis, and they have some Tulane students just arriving there now. No idea how many, or any other details.
