Below is a portion of an email sent from K-State's recruiting coordinator:

I've recently learned of a change in the rules regarding official visits. In the past, in order to go on an official visit a prospect had to submit a copy of their high school transcript and test scores to the school they are visiting - this can be "unofficial" copies faxed into the baseball office. Since K-State's compliance office is super-extra strict when it comes to these rules they actually prefer us to get this stuff faxed in if we plan on talking with a prospect more than one time on the phone! Now...starting this Fall, prospects must also be registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse prior to going on any official visit. This involves getting on the Clearinghouse website to fill out the registration form and also paying the fee with a credit card (the fee is $50, ouch!!). You do not need to submit your high school transcript and test scores to the Clearinghouse prior to visiting, however, you just need "unofficial" copies sent in to the baseball coaches of the school you are visiting. Sending "official" transcripts and test scores to the Clearinghouse can be done later in the school year. You just need to register and pay the fee.

This is a change from what I had explained in the past. Previously, I had always told propects to register with the Clearinghouse sometime during the their senior year, preferably in the fall. Now, I would recommend doing this as soon as you can if you plan on going on any official visits in the Fall.

A student CANNOT attend school unless he receives a final qualification by the clearinghouse. If you begin the process early, all you need in the end is the final transcript with graduated stamped on it. You don't want to start finding out in his senior year he does not qualify, and neither does the school.

The coach has to justify any scholarship he wants to give to a student by going through the AD and admissions first. If he is not registered properly and things get hung up by entrance fall he may not be allowed to participate. This also might hold up funding of any money.

Think about what would happen if they offered your son a scholarship and he wasn't qualified by the time he is ready to enter.

I don't know what school's policies are, but if I was an AD I would not allow official visits unless the athlete was registered.

I always find that these policies change when someone goofs.

Registration with the clearinghouse is something that is necessay, waiting until your senior year is not a good decision, IMO.

so, rather than wonder if it made sense I just now called a compliance guy and he confirmed that it IS a NEW NCAA rule.
many here have always suggested getting it out of the way early, a great idea now more than ever.

regarding "super-extra strict", I was assured that compliance rules are pretty concise & there are few gray areas.
anyone using "super-extra strict" interpretations is ...

1) making more work for themselves
2) putting their program at a disadvantage
