Hi everyone,

I wanted to kick this off a few days ago but due to a busy work schedule and a bit of procrastination on my end, now is the time.

The idea for this forum started a few weeks ago in conversation with Julie and a few other site moderators. With some of our members here experiencing the process of being recruited to play in college, or being scouted to play professional, there are many questions asked. Rather than having the questions dispersed throughout the message boards here, we thought it'd be a good idea to be able to congregate them in one central location, so onlookers and posters alike would have an easier time accessing the information.

My time on this site has been wonderful for me, and the learning experiences it has created have been immeasurably valuable. I've heard from many members who feel the same way. Now that I have moved off the field as a player and into the role of talent evaluation, I feel as though I might have some info to give back to the online community here from a firsthand perspective. We have many other posters here that are in similar professional roles and are equally - or more - qualified than I am. Hopefully the nature of this forum allows for continuous flow of valuable information from such individuals, to ensure that our fellow members are assisted through the process in the manner that they desire.

With that being said, I think we all look forward to kicking off this new forum and hope that it will be beneficial to the members of the site involved. The process of potentially playing baseball at the next level can be overwhelming and stressful, especially for those relatively new to the experience. Hopefully we can help alleviate that stress and be helpful in whatever way(s) we can.

Thanks so much for doing this I have a 2016 son and I have been reading for a while. I have chimed in a little bit but I mostly read. every day I try to go through some of the "golden threads". There is a treasure trove of good advice here. I have taken notes in a notebook, actually. I have come across some trollish stuff that must have been upsetting in real time, but most everything I've read here is like another gem of info.

So from a newcomer, thank you to the old timers and the middle aged timers for taking your time to help educate the newbies! I hope one day I will be able to do the same.

My son (Chris) is off to another weekend of baseball. Talking this morning with my wife (and daughter) when the term "projectable" came up, I Googled it, found a blog on this site and just happened upon a Jan,8 post by fanofgame. Brought a tear, seriously.. Today was a rare day that I didn't travel to the game as my business is slow, I have to put in some work.  I also argued with my son who at times seems less interested than I for his success at least when it comes to daily workout routines. Well, "He's only 14" is what I here from coaches but he is also 6'4", 185 lbs, a "projectable" body. I know a few athletes, some professional yet can only imagine the work ethic needed for success of any level always carrying that dream of reaching the top. I get frustrated yet try to believe the coaches must know something when pointing out his age and hearing "in time" etc.. Fanofgame, I have also become a fan and as your son departs, my son enters...

Cabbagedad refers to the extent of resources here thus any advice is always appreciated. My son (at 13) played sparingly last fall for a 16u team and for the first time I saw a different level of baseball, Scouts at our practices  etc. As he plays with the same team this summer and prepares for High School ball in the fall, I thank you in advance for allowing me to share in your knowledge..

Blessings to all of our boys futures..

During our Noah Lowry International Tournament. We had a visiting team from Perth, Australia. Noah pitched for the SF Giants, played in our Area Code games, graduated from Pepperdine.

We decided to present a one hour seminar to the 300 players and parents between games. We received questions and presented answers.

Topics:

1. Questions to ask the college coach.

2. How to qualify showcases and college camps.

3. Is pro baseball in your future?

4. What is the 6th tool.

5. Passion for the game.

During the games, we encourage a 16 year old player to switch hit. He was "on base"

50% of his AB's.

We value teaching, we do not have trophy's or an "All Star" team or allow coaches to argue with our umpires. The game is for the players to LEARN.

I posted this question earlier but saw your forum and wanted to post here as well.

Q1.  Does a redshirt Junior (Sr Academically/Jr Athletically) have more leverage and if so in what way than a Senior in the draft bonus pool under the new guidelines.

Q2.  My son is LHP who had alot of scout interest last year but had control issues.  Unfortunatly he was not drafted but has had a solid summer and seems to have made the necessary corrections.  He hit 97 2x over the summer and sat in low 90's  14 IP 26 Srtike outs , 5 walks, 7 Hits  1.02 ERA.  BAA was .146  Unfortunatly very wet season so many games cancelled   Is it appropriate to send his current stats to the scouts who have reached out to him in the past?

Thank you for being more specific.  If your son is near graduation, then there really isnt much more leverage. Seniors, unless they become top prospects dont get drafted until later or not drafted altogether and become free agents.  Because he has one more athletic season to compete, he may possibly get more money and get selected in the up coming draft.

Your son has two things going for him though, LHP and his velo. The other stats are meaningless.

You do not have to contact the scouts, they (the ones who have the area where he plays college) most likely will be out to see your son on scout day and during the season.

Good luck!

Yup they do that.
So my understanding is that you all thought that your son might be drafted and now is returning for his last academic year but junior season.
At this point you need to sit back and let it play out.  The draft is far away.
He doesnt need an advisor as there isnt much to advise.
I am sure that JH will respond as soon as he can.

1. Yes. Scouts don't focus on years of academic eligibility, they focus on years of collegiate eligibility. A senior doesn't have the leverage of another season of college baseball, a redshirt junior does.

2. No. If there are scouts interested in your son, I promise that they are continuing to follow his progress. I'm not sure what benefit a sample of 14 innings would serve in improving a player's stock for a draft that is more than ten months away.

Thank you...Another question.  What specifically should an advisor be doing on his behalf? He had several contact him last season and did decide to go with one. My husband and I are abit concerned because since the draft concluded he has really not heard from him, Shouldnt he be in contact with him to discuss his summer etc etc.

What do you feel the advisor should be discussing with your son? Is there anything that the advisor could do for your son that would benefit him in the short-term?

So lets say your son / my son is a MIF / 3rd baseman - 5 tool grinder playing DII ball is getting an advisor / agent a good thing... OR is this something only for DI players...?

Thanks,

Joe
