McKinney North had so many players earn a superlative honor on the District 9-4A baseball team that even head coach Brandon Milam admitted he was a little shocked.
North second baseman Michael Reed won District MVP, Trent Appleby was named Pitcher of the Year and first baseman Nico Taylor took home Offensive MVP in a season where the Bulldogs advanced to the state tournament for the first time in the program’s four varsity seasons.
North’s journey through the playoffs ended Wednesday in a 10-4 defeat to Fort Worth Arlington Heights in the state semifinals in Austin.
"I was pretty surprised we had three superlatives," Milam said. "It’s usually hard to do that."
Typically, it is hard for one team to have three players earn a superlative. It isn’t that hard to do, however, when you dominate the district schedule to the tune of a 12-2 record and have a team as talented as North.
Eight Bulldogs starters were represented in the district voting. North had four first-team players, including pitcher Michael Bolsinger, centerfielder Erik Ross, shortstop Drew Hanish and catcher Andrew Smith. Leftfielder Cameron Buford earned second-team honors.
Milam said third baseman Michael Flatt and designated hitter Cameron Eubanks, who were both honorable mention players, performed well enough after the votes were tallied to be worthy of a spot.
"They probably would have been up there if the voting was later," Milam said.
