NLI rec'd in mail? is this unusual? from JUCO?

I wondered the same thing, but just chalked it up as they really wanted my son. It was a JUCO in AZ and the dollar amount was filled in and all we had to do was sign. We hadn't even visited the school, applied or anything. They did talk to my son at a fall showcase in AZ and if not for where he ended up, would have gone there.

It was definitely a new one on me.

Ryan didn't receive any juco NLI after he signed with OU but we did notice several top jucos in the state called and offered full rides even after they knew he had already signed with a D-1. I would guess in your son's case they are hoping he will change his mind depending upon his draft status. As one coach told Ryan, "Remember that you have another option and please keep us in mind." He politely told them thanks for their interest but that he had already made his decision.

We have not received any in the mail, but we know somone who did. We have had many call and tell us that they would be interested if we went that route. Some gave the full push and others said after the draft if you are interested, call us. I also discovered that in Florida, some full rides are room, books, fees, tuition, 10 meals a week, and 75$ spending cash. Others are just tuition, fees, books and 1 meal a day. Some are better funded than others.

We had several of those phone calls that you mentioned where they said, "We have a place for him if things change..." but this school wasn't really in that group of calls...

Hmm...one thing that is interesting is that they were only "remotely" interested per se...early on...and now they just mailed out the papers...

If it was a surprise to receive the LOI in the mail then the coaches are not great communicators, are they? The coach of the 4-year school your son signed with most likely would not be happy if he signs with the JC now, and IMO you should let him know that the LOI has been received. Trust is an issue in signing any LOI, and I would suggest not signing this JC LOI if you and your son want to keep a great level of trust with the 4-year school coaching staff. If a team drafts your son and wants him to go the DNF route, then you may have some things to think about. There are going to be no guarantees with anything, especially the DNF path, in my opinion.

Someone alluded to the fact that this was a very bold offer which came without communication...

I think that some of them read the papers the week of signing then make the phone call or send the letter! They know that lots of early signers might be drafted and this way they might get you for DNF. I think that lots of college coaches know this occurs also. I chalked it up to another part of the process.

Texas if you have recieved one prepare to recieve more. Coaches send them out like hot cakes I guess. Senior year I think I recieved 15 NLI in total and to most of the schools showed absolutely no interest. But just remember it is another option and never get rid of it. If he thinks he might like the JUCO i would go visit. See what it has to offer and if it is nice then sign with both the JC and the D-1. Alot of people don't agree with doing that but I sure as heck would have if i was back in high school. It might piss a coach off but i mean you can't make everyone happy and if it is to you and in this case your son's benefit do it.

I am wondering why you think the JUCO NLI should be reported to the coach of the four year school where the NLI has been signed.

Forgot to mention NLI's are only good to sign for two weeks after they are sent out if i remember correctly.

Just a note of interest. The NJCAA signing period is only after January 15th, so the LOI you received will be invalid anyway. Sounds to me like the school may be a little unethical. Just my thought though.

I would only worry about it if your son is thinking of signing if he is drafted. if he's happy going to college, then the JUCO is a moot point. But, if he is interested in signing, the juco presents another option, and how fast he can re-enter the draft if he chooses not to sign.
