As a new resident in Texas, I have come across a sales tax question, and this is only place I know with Texans to ask.

I recently visited a local fast food restaurant. After ordering our meal, I felt that the bill was a few dollars higher than it should have been. After reviewing the bill, it appears that they charge taxes in two places totaling approximately 18%. Tell me the taxes aren't that much here in Texas.

There is the occasional Texas GUEST tax -- usually reserved for visitors from Connecticut -- who consider good TX BBQ to be the McRib. Some yankees welcome the extra 10%, and are "just glad to be here". Big Grin (it was probably a mistake unless you were part of a large party...but even then, you shouldn't be taxed on the tip ---- ummmm, was it in College Station? Cool)

Well, even I, enjoy a good McRib.

I know Texan does, too.

He always requests the Connecticut Yankee sauce for his McRibs.

I think Texan will like the College Station sauce, but it is a little too strong for me.

And, the 10% Yankee tax may confuse the FBC ladies.

We'll probably need to do a thread and explain that to all the newscouts.

Bless her heart.

FO, you crack me up...see you Saturday night in Waco...
obrady, I think we need more clarification, what fast food rest.(FFR) was this? McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's? Or was it a sit down restaurant with a waiter/waitress?

I've never seen a traditional FFR have an option for a gratuity, aka tip.

Tax is never added for parties of 8 or more, in a traditional sit down restaurant with a server/waiter. "Gratuity", also known as a tip, is added to parties of 8 or more in sit down, and it's usually around 15% of the total bill (yes including the state and local, if any, tax)

Tax is never Gratuity, and Gratuity is never Tax.
PDiddy,

On the way to work, in Frisco, sister city to Plano, and a member of the golden menage a trois nawthern mecca that includes McKinney, I was comtemplating the unfairness of the Yankee tax we have been discussing.

And, I recalled ordering something to east last evening on a supper break.

After I ordered, the young lady asked me, "WHERE ARE you from?"

Well, I used to be from here.................

But, not anymore.

On the way home at dark thirty this morning I realized that the sleeply little town of Frisco with the railroad tracks and grain storage elevators is not here anymore.

To me, "fast food" never includes a waiter/waitress. It is a chain burger joint. I'm not mentioning names, yet, to give them time to respond and correct the issue (if one really exists). If they don't then I will escalate it.

Partial details:
Menu Item price $5.15
Receipt price $5.76
Bottom line price after "second" tax $6.24

I'm not a math genius, but can anyone else get the math to work?

Did you order extra cheese or jalapenos? - Maybe some cherry flavor in your Dr. Pepper. I can't even get the first tax to come out correctly. They calculated 12% on the $5.15 ( and did not round it correctly). They may have the cash registers programmed incorrectly. Heaven help them - The State of Texas has no sense of humor when it comes to sales tax. Looks like they tacked on an additional 10% to the original pretax tab. Still, the math is not exactly correct. The saddest part is that very few people can look at the ticket and know it is wrong.
Okok, this could be a stretch but one particular fast food chain has 3 "sizes" for their combinaton meals. When you look up at the menu, you may see $5.15.....but.....the default order is "Regular" or "Medium"....which is up-sized from "Small". When you order, unless you specify small or large, you will get medium. Chances are you looked at the small price (who knew???), but you received the default/medium by not specifically ordering by size. I imagine the tax was correct, but the description on the receipt may have been confusing. (I just confused myself.) If the restaurant has a lot of orange and white ---- this could be the explanation. Whew, I'm tired. Cool
