Good - - A northern team that can recruit the country and wins on a consistent basis.

Bad - - Depending on position especially pitcher it would be real difficult to get extensive playing time with all of the young talent they have (Grant Johnson, Jeff Manship etc..)

Tom...You would be surprised as you travel around nationallly.

For every person that likes Notre Dame, there are at least two that can't stand the school.

I've liked them since the days when we got free tshirts from the nuns as altar boys.

That said, however, with the "problems" that they've had in their football program in the not-too-distant-past, that has left a bad taste in many people's mouths.

Their success and national notoriety is in the football program and not in their baseball program.

Been,

We just had a player turn down Wake Forest, Virginia, Florida to name a few schools to commit to Notre Dame. One of the main reasons he committed is because of the aura (and the great education, and the great baseball program and the great scholarship he recieved and the fact he loved it there).

Notre Dame is now a baseball powerhouse. Plus the fact that they now have one of the best recruiters in Terry Rooney coaching at the school is a huge plus for the program's future.

I think the point was they don't conduct spring training in New York or Chicago, they go to warm weather. ND holds pre-season in South Bend.
Gary...Last year, ND opened the season in Arizona; went to the Metrodome for their weekend series; and, then, they were in Florida for a week or so. So...They, too, head South to warmer climes.

They should have plenty of money for their spring trip this year after the football season when they buy-out Willingham's contract.

Only so many times a football team can play Army, Navy, Air Force and hamburger U in a season.
They have done well since Mainieri has been there except for the first few years when they won 40+ games and didn't get invited to the NCAA tourney.

Best team was likely the World Series team of a couple of years ago with Stanley and Stavisky and Heilmann.

RPI of 46 last May before the NCAA tourney field was selected.

I know that the injury to Macri really put a damper on ND's plans for the past two years. He put up some monster hr numbers at the Cape this past summer through the first 40 at bats and then disappeared finishing below the Mendoza line. Maybe this coming spring will find him reaching his promise.

Too, it will be interesting to see how the new coach fits into the mix with their pitching coach taking the head job at Virginia.

Games at ND are great, cold weather or warm weather. Great crowds, very enthusiastic students. Coaching staff is top-notch, one of the best in the country.

Their players tend to stay for four years, even those drafted very high, and they don't overrecruit as far as I can tell. This says to me that they do a great job of developing their players.

Very impressive facility, too, although it looks nicer from the outside than it actually is inside, but that is a very small criticism. The campus itself has some stunning attributes, but other parts are a bit of a letdown.

And, hey, it is ND and that aura is very real, like it or not.

By the way, looks like ND will remain independent for football long term and in the Big East for all other sports. If they opt for a full-time conference affiliation, expect it to be the Big 10.

Uh oh, there it is! Can't have an opinion and be a moderator. I happen to hate Notre Dame! I do like the movie Rudy though. I always root for whoever plays Notre Dame. I hate the Yankees also. I like the guy who cost the cubs a shot at the series. biglaugh None of that stuff makes me a bad person. It is simply my sports preference.

PS, there football hasn't been any good since Lou "the Leprechaun" left.

How bout them Lobo's?

Dont know about that situation but usually its because a player is unsignable unless drafted very early. If no one drafts him early theres no reason to waste a later draft pick on him. I know Notre Dame had a pitcher picked in the first round who went back to school instead of signing. Thats my guess and its probably a good guess.
