Lucky for me my kids I have 6 of 'em...that gives me time to get better as a parent and believe me when I say I've had lots of gettin' better to do! (Not quite so lucky for the older ones!) Wink

On the baseball side, there's been quite a few nutty things I did too...and once again, lucky for my kids that I try to learn and do better! Cool

While I concede this is a "risky" thread...could take many turns. Lets try not to critique each others' nutty things and just fess up ourselves.

I'll start.

I think it was pretty nutty for me to sit behind the backstop for the 6 months or so I did...with a radar gun pointed at my older son. I think it looks silly now when I see it and I won't do it again. I'm embarrassed I ever did (mid-HS years).

OK, your turn(s)! Big Grin

I'm afraid I did (do?) the same thing. I went to a game the other night where I had no one playing. It was quite comical to listen to the parents screaming at the refs.
My most nutty (stupid) thing occured last season. Son was playing on three teams (Middle School, Local Travel and Babe Ruth). Well time came for Babe Ruth All-stars (theoretically 4th team) and son said he didn't want to do it. I thought he was crazy as it was more game time against good competition (not a plethora of travel teams here in NH...so Babe ruth still has some decent players, especially all-star teams)and he would have most likely been #1 or #2 pitcher. He was burnt out he said and wanted to go on a fishing vacation with my parents instead the week of states. Well like an idiot and pompous a$$ I kept going off telling him how foolish he was for passing up this opportunity etc..etc... Eventually I came to my senses and apologized for beating the dead horse a few times over. Of course now looking back it was a good thing that he took the time off. It gave him time away and at the same time refueled his baseball playing tank. This year he is looking forward to playing All-Stars and playing all the ball he can.
Plus now it is an on going joke between us so we get quite a few laughs from it.

This is not something I did, but something I witnessed at a showcase last weekend. The boys were running the 60 in the outfield. Parents in the bleachers; one of the dads is timing his son's 60 with a clock on his cell phone from the bleachers. He was pretty excited about it too (LMBAO).

A little off track here, probably more regretful than nutty.

Son was 12-13 and had a pretty bad game playing first. I think he had three errors with two of them going between his legs. After the game I let him know in a not so calm manner what I thought he was doing wrong. After berating him unjustly, I put in one of my favorite songs of all time "Simple Man" by Lynard Skynard just to get over the anger.

Well today, my once favorite song is disliked tremendously by my son. Says it reminds him of that particular day. A day I will always regret, not because I played the song, but because of the way I treated him and there is something out there that brings back that bad memory.

Maybe I should of started a different thread called "Regretful Days".

Radar gun? I still get stares when I settle in behind the backstop with this...

Wink
Fortunately there was no after effects to this dumb decision:

My son had a rec basketball game on Saturday. As he was driving to the basket for the winning points, an opponent flies across the court and tackles him, injuring his knee. He said his knee hurt when he regained consciousness.

On Sunday his travel basketball team was scheduled to play in the championship game. From Saturday noon to Sunday noon I iced him down continually, then had a trainer tape him up so he could play in a 11U travel basketball championship despite a badly twisted knee and a concussion the day before.

i'm pretty sure this was just plain stupid, but i'll post anyway.

oldest was 9 at the time, LL game
i was coaching. getting shelled had used i think 4 pitchers at this point.son was the last one i could use, whatever the LL rule was.

he takes one off the shin, had a lump as big as a baseball on it.of course in pain.i told him to tuck his skirt in and get out there. i put an icepack in his sock and he finished the game. my thoughts were to be tough on them i had to be tough on mine.funny i wouldn't have done it to any other player. tough= dumb.

after a week in mini camp, his coach asked him if he was the biggest A-hole he'd ever played for? nope, my dad was. but i wouldn't be here today if he wasn't.

looking back, i wouldn't win any coaching awards.

They used to time my son's 60 with an hour glass. I figured he would need to pitch after high school.
