CHEFMIKE7777...thanks for the information. This is the school he wants to go to. From what I am reading on this site, a scholarship offer doesn't seem to guarantee anything anyway. If it is a yearly scholarship, you can be gone by year 2. I think the reality is if the coach wants you, likes you and recruits you, you have to trust you have a spot. Then it is up to the player to keep the spot.
2catchersons. One thing we did research on was how often athletic $ got rescinded and why. In my son's case it is the schools athletic administration practice that they would not rescind a scholarship for performance or play time. We got that assurance from both HC and AD on a visit. From everything I have heard from former and current athletes at this school, that is true. They had, also, said that when he was going in as a walk on. That they do not cut - they recruit to have 35 players on roster and if someone does not come / leaves- then they will just have 32, 33,34 on roster. I have seen that to be true as well. Lastly, while coming as a non scholarship athlete, he was told the 2nd year based off of everything (including performance), he could potentially be offered money from then on. We have heard thru several teammates parents about that very thing occurring.
Not sure if that is practice everywhere but we are very pleased with that at his school
Nice to hear they do not cut. I know for a fact that several schools cut players after the fall season. Pretty hard on a kid that sets his goals on playing for that school, is recruited by the coach and is cut after the fall season. Most of them seem to be non scholarship kids.
Son's situation is similar to Chef's. Non scholarship athlete with a nice package from the institution. 36 in fall camp so nothing outrageous. Most of his HS summer teammates are looking at fall rosters around 40 it seems.
He says that just as promised no difference in how the guys are treated. In fact he has no idea who is getting money or not.
Obviously do your research and find out if you can trust the HC and what he says. That is what all this boils down to.
In sons case it was actually a benefit to be a non letter of intent player in my eyes. About the same money, but if something changed (in his case HC has been highly sought after for big time openings) my son retained all his options.
