Someone told me that you are no longer eligible to play in JV games, regardless of your class, once you earned a varsity letter.  This true?

Depends on the state. In some states once a player is in a varsity box score they are no longer eligible for JV. Other states allow a kid to start at a position in a JV game and walk over to the varsity bullpen late in the game.

First, google is your friend.  Google it for your state.  Secondly, I couldn't care less about the team an opponent puts on the field.  I have my team to coach.  Do you honestly think that a coach is running around identifying members of an opposing team as to whether they coached or not?  Do you think that this is something that is turned in to the state associations?  Hell no.

It doesn't really matter. Coaches know the situation and 98% of the time they probably won't know or care if he played varsity. Any reasonable coach will understand that they're down there to get work and no reasonable coach would send a varsity starter down to win a JV game.

I don't know how the state would even get tipped off about this. Worst case scenario make up an excuse that he is rehabbing and just there to get some ABs/innings.

Yes coaches do keep up with it and report it if there is a rule.   We had a team in our conference that kept up with every other team and would call and ask who played in the jv game so they could keep up with the innings each player played.  I refused to give them who played in the jv game because I was not going to be a part of that and I also did not care and never took a lineup from the other team.  It was JV.  Mine was JV was for getting better and as long as you held to some lineup I did not care.  We didn't keep a book.  I moved guys around the field and pitched the guys who I thought needed mound time whether they were freshman or seniors.  I've never known a state to have a rule like what is suggested but I know most have a total number of games or innings you can play.  Some conferences/regions have a rule you can't play seniors or you can't play a varsity starter on jv but not a state rule in most southern states.

As has been said, each state/sanction has different rules and it's pretty easy to find what applies to yours.  In our state, you can bounce back and forth but just can't play two levels same day.  No seniors on JV (or at least that is the gentleman's rule).  From what I gather, most states allow bouncing back and forth.

I am very much of the same mindset as Pitchingfan.  It's JV.  It's development.  Who the heck cares?  The better players an opponent roles out, the better preparation it is for your own players.  Why would you want to question that even if there is a rule in place?  That said, there are plenty of teams/JV coaches who do care enough to question it in effort to salvage a JV win .  Almost as bad, there are parents who will try to catch opposing teams in this type of infraction and feel like they have "really helped the team" by reporting.

Francis, if you’re wondering about your son catching in a varsity scrimmage it doesn’t count.

This has nothing to do with my kid. It's an open question not specific to any individual. It's folly to assume that everything is about my kid.

For what other reason woukd anyone care?

Better to be educated than ignorant, no?

Yes, when there’s a purpose. No, when it takes on the relevance of Cliff Klaven knowledge. The only person who needs to know in this case is the varsity coach to avoid breaking rules and forfeiting games.

You don't think that parents of current juniors who are vying for varsity and who have yet to letter aren't interested in this type of information?

I believe there are parents who worry about too many insignificant issues.  Their focus should be on emotionally supporting their kid. Let the kid navigate to process. The kids tend to know more about what’s going on internally to the team than parents.
