This has to do with positioning not a call

Scenario:

HS Playoff Game for the State Title

Three Umpires--home, first and third

Leadoff batter drills one into the left centerfield gap and heads to third for a triple

Which umpire should be at third making the call as the batter slides in ??

I am very imterested in your answer

Not an umpire, but I'd say (guess) HP, and 3BU hold positions and 1BU follows to 2B for potential call there. If I'm wrong, remember, I'm no blu zebra.

Maybe not, but you gave a good answer. If it was a fly ball down the LF line, or a sinking line drive, 3BU would go out to cover, PU would move up to 3B to make call, 1BU would rotate to plate in case runner tried for home if ball got away.

In this case Home ump covered third and both base umps where in the outfield beyond second

There was no ump to cover home if the throw to third had gotten away and the runner tried to score.

Sounds like there was no pre-game conference. Horrible mechanics.

I could not believe what I was seeing

On top of the moment the ball was hot you knew it was into the gap and to the wall 400 feet away. The way the putfield was playing him you knew it right away.
